Kaufda ( spelling : kaufDA) is a German online portal with headquarters in Berlin , which publishes location-related digitized shopping brochures on the Internet. The company behind the offer, Bonial International GmbH , employs over 230 people from 16 different countries.
history
Kaufda was founded in August 2008 in Berlin by Christian Gaiser, Thomas Frieling, Cihan Aksakal and Tim Marbach and went online in December 2008. The consumer portal Marktjagd.de was launched back in February 2008, which also distributes e-brochures, but also digitalises individual products, for example from the permanent range of a retailer.
The company was financed in 2008 by StudiVZ founder Michael Brehm, Onvista founder Stephan Schubert and Ricardo.de founder Stefan Glänzer. In 2009, the Otto investment company eVenture Capital Partners and T-Venture were added.
Kaufda was able to gain Deutsche Telekom, RTL, Bild.de and Ebay as partners.
At the beginning of 2011 there were first rumors of a takeover. Companies such as Deutsche Post AG, the Otto Group and the Tengelmann group had tried to get a majority in Kaufda. On March 2, 2011, Axel Springer AG took over a majority of 74.9 percent in Kaufda. The estimated purchase price was around EUR 30 million or US $ 40 million.
In December 2011, the internationalization of the Kaufda concept began under the Bonial brand. The Bonial International Group now has national subsidiaries in Germany under the brand “kaufDA”, in France as “Bonial”, in Spain with the brand “Ofertia”, in Russia under the brand “Lokata” and in Brazil under the name “Guiato”.
At the end of November 2017, the US business called Retale was discontinued.
In 2013, the website had over 4.35 million users in Germany and was considered to be the online brochure network with the greatest reach.
controversy
The media discussion with the company was at times very emotional. In 2010, Kaufda was referred to as the “publishers' nightmare”, and CEO Christian Gaiser also referred to as the “horror of the publishers”, but also as a “startup hero”. The fear motive was often the topic of the media in connection with the company.
Awards
In August 2009 the company received the WECONOMY Award for young talent from the Handelsblatt and the Wissensfabrik.
In November 2009, Kaufda was selected as one of the top 25 web companies in Europe at the "Web & Mobility Summit 2009" in Montreux, Switzerland.
Also in November 2009, Kaufda was voted “StartUp of the Year” by a jury of experts from the online magazine Gründerszene.
On February 28, 2013, the Working Group Online Research (AGOF) ranked 41st in the German traffic ranks. This makes Kaufda the currently best-placed German online brochure portal.
