The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is a Note smartphone from Samsung Electronics with the Android 4.3 (“Jelly Bean”) operating system. The device was presented to the public on September 4, 2013 at IFA 2013 and has been available since the end of September 2013. The successor to the Note 3 is the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 , the predecessor the Samsung Galaxy Note II .
Specifications
design
The device is similar to its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy Note II, but with a thickness of 8.3 mm and a weight of 168 g, it is slightly thinner and lighter. It has a metallic plastic edge and a leather-like back. As with the Galaxy S5 , the metal frame around the display protects against glass breakage in the display glass, as it protrudes about a millimeter . This makes it unlikely that the display glass will hit the ground if it falls. The metal frame absorbs contact with the ground.
hardware
The LTE version (N9005) uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC with 3 GB of RAM and a quad-core processor clocked at 2.3 GHz. The GSM version (N9000) will also use an Exynos 5 Octa SoC from Samsung . A 5.7 inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels ( 1080p ) is used as the touchscreen . There are 32 or 64 GB of internal memory available, which can be expanded using a microSD memory card . The battery has a slightly increased capacity of 3200 mAh compared to its predecessor . Like the other Note models, it has an input pen called S-Pen , which has been further improved in the Note 3.
Like the other Galaxy models, the Note 3 is also available in different versions. This is how the slightly weaker version, the Note 3 Neo, appeared.

camera
General
The 13-megapixel camera on the back can record videos in a resolution of 1080p with 60 fps or in 4K resolution with 30 fps. It is the first smartphone camera with 4K video recording. Slow motion recordings are possible in HD 720p resolution at 120 frames per second. The 1 / 3.0 ″ sensor is similar to that of the Galaxy S4 (Sony IMX135). There is no optical, but a digital image stabilizer, which is also available for videos up to 1080p @ 30fps. The N9005 has a removable battery.
Camera app
The pre-installed camera app has the same design as the S4 models, but offers even more motif programs such as “Surround Shot” or “Golf Shot”.
The Note 3's camera software has more motif programs than all other S and Note smartphones. However, the Galaxy S6 allows extended setting options after a system update (system update) to Android 5.1.
Video recording
The recording of 4K videos is limited to five minutes per video clip (video file), after five minutes the recording stops.
Bit rate
Bit rate of video recordings:
Name of resolution | resolution | Number of pixels | Frame rate | Bit rate in Mbit / s | MB / s |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Ultra HD (4K UHD) | 3840 × 2160 | 8,294,400 | 30th | 48 to 50 | 6th |
FullHD | 1920 × 1080 | 2,073,600 | 60 | 27.8 | 3.5 |
FullHD | 1920 × 1080 | 2,073,600 | 30th | 16 to 20 | 2 to 2.5 |
HD 720p | 1280 × 720 | 921,600 | 30th | 12 | 1.5 |
480p | 720 × 480 | 345,600 | 30th | 8th | 1 |
240p- QVGA | 320 × 240 | 76,800 | 30th | 3 | 0.4 |
MMS- QCIF | 176 × 144 | 25,344 | 15th | <1 | Almost 0. |
While recording a video clip up to 1080p @ 30fps, still images can be recorded with a resolution of 4128 × 2322 (16: 9) pixels. This corresponds to the maximum effective sensor section for 16: 9 images of approx. 9.6 megapixels . If a 4: 3 video resolution such as QVGA is selected, the full effective sensor resolution of 4128 × 3096 pixels is used for the still images. These still images also contain EXIF information. It is also possible to record still images with the digital image stabilizer activated in the maximum resolution.
zoom
As with all common smartphones, the camera of the Galaxy Note 3 does not offer an optical zoom.
The camera offers a lossless digital zoom of x2.0 for video recordings with 1080p videos at 30fps, with lower resolutions the full zoom range of 4.0x can be used without loss of quality. The lossless digital zoom cannot be used for video recordings that have a higher resolution than Full HD or a frame rate higher than 30 frames per second.
Serial pictures
With the pre-installed camera app, you can take up to 20 series pictures in a row at 8 frames per second in full resolution.

criticism
The Note 3 is one of the first phones with the Region Lock introduced by Samsung, a new form of Sim-Lock. This means that the Note 3 must first be activated with a SIM card from the respective target market before SIM cards from other regions can also be used. Activation means inserting an accepted SIM card and using it to make calls for at least five minutes. This measure was intended to prevent the gray trade. Samsung came under fire for introducing this limitation. The reason for the block is incomprehensible, customer unfriendly and an unnecessary restriction. In the meantime the lock has been loosened a little.
