The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 ( own notation : SAMSUNG Galaxy Note7 ) was a smartphone the manufacturer Samsung , which in Europe the successor to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 should be, as the grade 5 did not appear in Europe. A few weeks after publication, production of the device was stopped due to technical defects and the devices that had already been sold were recalled.
Surname
The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 was not officially marketed in Europe. In order to avoid confusion, the serial number was adapted to that of the Samsung Galaxy S series smartphones presented in the same year - i.e. S7 and S7 Edge - by skipping the designation Note 6 . Until then, the serial number of a Galaxy S device presented in a certain year was always increased by one compared to the Note device presented later in the same year.
Recall campaign
Shortly after the launch of the Galaxy Note 7, it became known that a production error had caused the battery to overheat and, in some cases, to explode during the charging process. Samsung then launched a recall . According to Samsung, 0.1 percent of all devices sold are afflicted with the error. Samsung offered anyone who already owned a device a free exchange for a new device. The device is said to have been sold around 2.5 million times in ten countries by the day of the recall.
Due to the potential fire and explosion hazard, the US Aviation Administration (FAA) issued the recommendation on September 8, 2016 not to have the device in operation during a flight or to charge it on board, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) followed the day after . Various airlines, including Lufthansa , prohibited the use of the Note 7 on board their aircraft.
The recall campaign launched by Samsung turned out to be difficult, since defective lithium batteries or devices with such are generally prohibited in air transport. In order to ensure the worldwide delivery of the replacement models that it claims to be safe, Samsung felt compelled to provide their packaging with a special label so that they could be distinguished from the previously delivered defective models.
After some of the Note 7's replacement devices ignited, the South Korean news agency Yonhap and the Wall Street Journal reported in early October 2016 that Samsung had stopped production for the time being. After the new fire reports, AT&T and T-Mobile US announced that they would stop selling the Note 7.
Worldwide sales stop
At the beginning of September 2016, sales of the Galaxy Note 7 were temporarily stopped. After already delivered smartphones with improved batteries from the exchange program caught fire, Samsung announced the end of production of the Galaxy Note 7 on October 11, 2016, because there might be another technical problem besides the overheating batteries. The group called for original and replacement devices to be switched off and no longer used. In some countries software updates were distributed which were supposed to deactivate the devices still in circulation.
