ES Automobilguss , now Eisenwerk Erzgebirge 1566 GmbH , is a German automotive supplier belonging to the Prevent Group with headquarters in Frankfurt am Main and the production facility in Schönheide's district of Schönheiderhammer in Saxony. The foundry produces differential gear housings, rocker arms and brake carriers for large automobile manufacturers and automotive suppliers.

history

Schönheiderhammer district

The origins of ES Automobilguss lie in the Schönheiderhammer hammer works built in the Ore Mountains in 1566 . Due to the location above the Eibenstock drinking water dam , annual production is limited to 25,000 tons of cast iron. The company operates a ferrous metal foundry with a production capacity of over 20 tons per day in accordance with the Federal Immission Control Act . The main focus of production is the casting of differential housings for cars, of which around 7 million are delivered to automobile companies every year. This means that gear housings from ES Automobilguss are installed in every tenth newly produced car worldwide (as of 2013).

The company operates its own model building .

The company has been a subsidiary of the Prevent Group since November 2015 . After the conclusion of a collective agreement with the previous owners in May 2015, which had been preceded by warning strikes, they sold the company to the Prevent Group.

In August 2016, the company stopped delivering housings for the Volkswagen MQB 450 transmission , triggering a production stop in several VW plants.

In May 2019 the company was renamed "Eisenwerk Erzgebirge 1566 GmbH". The company has a profit transfer agreement with Bloukrans Ohlanga Capital Holding GmbH, Frankfurt / Main. This company belongs to the Prevent Group, its previous address is identical to the headquarters of the Prevent Group in Wolfsburg. ES Automobilguss GmbH, Schönheide can also be found on the website of the Prevent Group at the locations. The website is still Esguss.de.

Problems because of a VW order

In spring 2018, problems arose due to an ongoing order from Volkswagen to manufacture transmission parts. Deliveries to VW were discontinued. The problems raised by VW are seen as a reaction to the refusal to deliver to VW in summer 2016 in connection with a dispute between the foundry's owners and VW. The volume of the VW order accounts for more than two thirds of the foundry production. ES Automobilguss has around 400 employees in March 2018. The expiry of the existing supply contracts in 2018 was already known in 2016. The management has already submitted an application for short-time allowance to the employment agency. In the opinion of experts, the loss of this production volume can lead to an end to the foundry.

After VW terminated the supply contract without notice, ES Automobilguss laid off 160 of its 385 employees.

ES Automobilguss filed an application for an injunction with the aim that VW would have to accept the contractually agreed parts. In November 2018, the Dresden Higher Regional Court refused to issue the requested ruling in the second instance for an amount in dispute of 30 million euros. Due to its sudden interruption in the delivery of agreed parts to VW in 2016, VW had considerable production problems, so that VW felt compelled to agree a new regulation of the supply contracts with ES Automobilguss. The conduct of ES Automobilguss was, according to the antitrust panel of the court, an illegal threat with a sensitive evil. VW therefore did not illegally exploit its dominant position when terminating the contract in March 2018. The consequence of the de facto end of the delivery to VW led to the termination of a further 38 employees in November 2018.

Expansion of the product range

With the aim of more flexible production in small and medium-sized units and the possibility of also being able to manufacture ductile iron , ES Automobilguss announced investments of 10 million euros in autumn 2018, of which 3 million would be for a plant for the production of molds for the Potting process have already been implemented. The new electric melting furnace (OTTO JUNKER medium-frequency induction crucible furnace system) with 2 × 6,000 kg was put into operation in autumn 2019. With the investments, the company aims to open up new areas such as "construction equipment manufacturers, railway construction and the industrial sector in general". “Only nodular cast iron instead of malleable cast iron and various related processes; Malleable cast iron will disappear ”, is the assessment of RKW Sachsen.
