The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (also Samsung Galaxy Note8 ) is a smartphone from the Note series from the manufacturer Samsung . The “ Phablet ” was presented as part of the annual “Unpacked” event on August 23, 2017 in New York and has been on the market since September 15, 2017.
Innovations
In contrast to its predecessor, the built-in translation function has been improved, which enables individual words or entire sentences to be translated into up to 71 languages. The S Pen is now more pressure sensitive and the note taking functions have been expanded. For the first time in a Galaxy Note, Samsung's in-house language assistant "Bixby" is also available, which so far can only be used in English and Korean.
As with the Galaxy S8, there is now an iris scanner at the top of the Note 8, with which you can unlock the device by capturing your own iris. As with the S8, the physical home button on the predecessors was removed in favor of the larger screen; it is now virtually at the bottom of the screen. The fingerprint sensor that was previously embedded in the home button was moved next to the camera lens on the back of the device.
The Galaxy Note 8, including the S Pen, is fully waterproof in accordance with IP68 certification. If there is water in the USB socket, the device automatically deactivates the charging function and notifies the user. Induction charging is not affected.
In contrast to the Galaxy S8, the Note 8 has 2 GB more RAM and, for the first time, a dual camera system.
Screen and image processor
The AMOLED screen uses Gorilla Glass 5 from Corning and achieves a brightness of up to 1200 cd · m −2 . Thus, it is approx. 22% brighter than the Galaxy S8 and, according to the manufacturer, enables content to be read easily in strong ambient light and in direct sunlight.
According to the manufacturer, the image processor should offer better brightness and contrast reproduction as well as higher performance and better energy-saving modes.
As with the Galaxy S8, the screen is rounded on both sides, making the device appear frameless ("Infinity Display").
Cameras
Two cameras with a resolution of 12 megapixels each are installed on the back of the device, one with a wide-angle lens and one with a telephoto lens (double zoom compared to the wide-angle lens). Both are optically image stabilized. The camera software offers a so-called “live focus” for highlighting objects or people in the foreground and for subsequent adjustment of the depth of field , a “dual recording” function, which also captures the surroundings over the edge of the created image, and the option of HDR -Recordings. On the front there is the front camera with a resolution of 8.0 megapixels and auto focus.
S pen
The touch-sensitive screen can be operated precisely with the stylus ("S Pen"); it is also used for handwriting recognition instead of the classic keyboard. You can also create handwritten notes on the switched-off screen ( Screen Off Memo ). With the Samsung Notes app supplied on the smartphone , entire notebooks can be created and edited, which can be supplemented with graphics, photos or drawings.
Pressing the button on the side of the S Pen opens Air Command , a context menu that offers various apps or functions, such as taking screenshots, instant translation or creating a note (above the actual screen content without opening a separate app ) can be used. Furthermore, the input pen can be used like a mouse by hovering the screen (the pen is moved a few millimeters over it without touching).
Like the smartphone, the S Pen is completely waterproof and, thanks to the technology used by Wacom , can also be used underwater without any problems.
Docking station "DeX"
Like the Galaxy S8, the Note 8 is compatible with the “Samsung DeX” system, a docking station for the device that transforms the smartphone into an ordinary desktop PC . There are also connections for a mouse and keyboard, a monitor ( HDMI ) and a network cable. The smartphone then functions as a computer and switches off its own screen; An adapted user interface is displayed on the monitor. Alternatively, the display of the smartphone can be mirrored on the monitor.
operating system
The device was shipped with Android 7.1.2. The latest (as of June 2019) official operating system version is Android 9.
