particularities

The HTC One (code name M7 ) is a smartphone from HTC and has a 1.7 gigahertz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 (APQ8064T) quad-core processor with 2 GB of RAM. The 4.7 inch (~ 11.9 cm) screen has a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels and is protected with 2nd generation Gorilla Glass . The operating system is Android 4.1.2 with the HTC Sense 5.0 user interface , an update to Android 4.4.3 ("KitKat") and HTC Sense 6.0 is available via over-the-air update . The update to Android 5.0.2 "Lollipop" was released in February 2015 and should be the last major update.

The successor, the HTC One (M8) , was announced in March 2014, and sales began in early April 2014.

An adapted Android version is used as the operating system, in which HTC uses the Sense surface. The home screen is divided into three parts:

  • The weather and time are displayed in the upper third.
  • The main part consists of the so-called "Blink Feed" (this name is intended to convey that new messages are to be seen on the home screen with every blink ).
  • A smaller part at the bottom of the screen shows the quick access bar.

The backside illumination Ultra pixel camera with 4.1 megapixels and a two-axis image stabilizer can also record full HD videos. Also are HDR -Videoaufnahmen fps possible at age 60. HTC deliberately reduced the number of megapixels in order to increase the sensor area per pixel and thus the captured light per pixel, which should bring a higher image quality, especially under poor lighting conditions. The front camera (2.1 megapixels) enables video telephony and full HD video recordings. The housing consists almost entirely of anodized aluminum . Joints made of polycarbonate hide the antennas, which must not be shielded by the aluminum. The sides are also filled with polycarbonate. It measures only around 4 mm at the edge; at the thickest point 9 mm. The battery is not removable and there is no memory expansion option. The on / off switch also functions as a learnable infrared remote control for most infrared devices. The phone transmits on all LTE frequencies relevant in Germany.

The HTC One was released on March 15, 2013 in stores.

Model variants

Different hardware and software variants of the HTC One have been released in different regions.

Mini and Max versions

There is also a mini and max version with different sizes and features.

Developer Edition

In a limited edition, a "Developer Edition" of a 64 GB HTC One was released in the USA , which has been sold exclusively on the HTC website since April 19, 2013. This variant is sold with an open boot loader , which can be used for developing and installing custom ROMs . It supports most GSM networks and can therefore also be used outside the USA. An update to Android 5.1 has been available for this model since April 2015.

Google Play Edition

On May 30, 2013, an HTC One Google Play Edition was presented, which has been sold exclusively in the American Google Play store since June 26, 2013. It has a classic Android 4.2.2 operating system , which, like on Nexus devices, has not been changed by its own user interfaces, etc. This has the advantage that all updates come from Google without waiting for adaptation to the device.

Chinese version

The Chinese version of the HTC One has been available exclusively from the Chinese mobile communications providers China Unicom , China Telecom and China Mobile since the end of April 2013. Unlike the international version, the back is removable. It also has a microSD slot and two SIM card slots ( dual SIM mobile phone ).

Japanese version

The Japanese version of the HTC One ( HTC J One HTL22 ) was presented by the Japanese provider KDDI in May 2013, but it is almost identical to the Chinese version. The only difference is the integrated FeliCa NFC payment.

Dual-Sim version

There is also a dual SIM variant, which can be operated with two SIM cards at the same time. However, this is not intended for the German market and therefore does not offer any support for LTE in Germany.

Reception and criticism

Many of the first owners of an HTC One complained about the gaps between the aluminum and the plastic frame and the unclean workmanship of the frame. These problems occurred primarily with the silver model, but are only rare with the devices currently in production. Another widespread serial error that is caused by faulty heat insulation of the camera module is the so-called "purple tinge", which occurs only on the rear camera and causes all the images created to be strongly falsified. The error can only be corrected by a repair, for which the smartphone must be sent in.

The company iFixit , which specializes in repairs to electrical appliances and provides corresponding instructions, criticized the HTC One for the fact that - like many modern high-tech devices - it can hardly be repaired without damage even by professionals without special tools. Both the battery and the display can only be replaced after removing the housing.

The HTC One performed very well in numerous comparison tests and was described by many as one of the best Android smartphones on the market.

Some tests even spoke of "probably the best smartphone that you can currently buy" when they appeared.

However, the HTC One did not sell well. The Wall Street Journal reported that 5 million devices were sold in the first 3 months. The iPhone 5 needed for example, only three shopping days to be able to sell 5 million units. However, Mark Woodward, President of HTC America, said the HTC One sales launch was probably the most successful in the company's history.
