A dual SIM mobile phone is a mobile phone that can hold two SIM cards and use them alternately or partially at the same time. Some copies have a second transceiver .

purpose

There are many reasons to use more than one cellular connection on the same device. This includes separating private and business calls, avoiding SIM card changes when you travel abroad frequently, and using different tariffs specifically, such as a telephone and data flat rate (“ flat rate ”). In particular, dual SIM cell phones are popular where there are lower prices for calls between customers of the same provider. Dual SIM devices allow users to have separate contact lists on each SIM card and make roaming easier by using a foreign network but keeping the local card. Often, sellers of overseas travel SIMs recommend using dual SIM to replace the home provider's card with their card on the same cell phone without the change being much noticeable.

history

The Finnish manufacturer Benefon launched the first forerunner of the dual SIM cell phone in the summer of 2000 with the Benefon twin . The device could accept two SIM cards, but not use them at the same time. The card to be used had to be selected when switching on, a change was only possible by switching it off and then selecting it again after switching on again. That was probably the reason why the model was not a resounding success and why there were no imitators.

In the following years, however, so-called dual SIM adapters became popular, which can accommodate two cards and are connected to the network card slot of the cell phone. The first adapters of this type were so large that they could only be carried externally, which is why they were not widely used. In 2003, dual SIM adapters came onto the market, with which almost every commercially available telephone could be retrofitted internally. However, with all of these adapters it is only possible to switch between two (or more) SIM cards, but not at the same time that they are ready to send and receive.

In 2006, mobile phone manufacturers from China and other Asian countries began to bring devices onto the market that could operate both cards at the same time. These were initially only offered on the domestic or Asian market. However , they became available worldwide through online trading portals such as eBay . Since the beginning of 2007, they have also been offered occasionally by private providers from Germany and the EU.

Some Chinese companies are equipping mobile phones with dual SIM at low cost, especially in Asia. The cell phones, which usually include touchscreen interfaces and other advanced features, are usually sold for a much lower price than brand name cell phones. While some of these cell phones are sold under typical names or are rebranded by smaller companies with their own brands, countless manufacturers, especially in China, produce dual SIM cell phones with counterfeit brands, such as those from Nokia or Samsung. This happens either as optically identical clones of the originals or in a completely different design, but with the logo of a well-known manufacturer in order to benefit from the recognition feature or the image of the brand.

At the Hanover information technology trade fair Cebit in March 2007, several Asian manufacturers presented dual SIM devices. After Cebit, in March 2007, the electronics mail order company Conrad was the first major German retailer to include a dual SIM mobile phone in its range. After several postponements of the delivery date and model changes, devices had been available since the beginning of 2008.

Since November 2007, Samsung was the first well-known manufacturer to offer a dual- SIM mobile phone with the D880 . The device was initially only sold in Asia and Russia, with the Russian version also containing a German menu. Since March 2008, the device has also been officially sold in Germany. The successor D980 was meanwhile also available via EU import.

A breakthrough occurred in early 2008 when several models from various (mostly no-name) providers came onto the market, some of which were also available from large chains or online mail order companies.

In 2012 there were already a large number of dual SIM devices at low prices, both as smartphones and as simple cheap devices; The Finnish manufacturer Nokia offered the Nokia 101, a dual SIM model for around EUR 30.

Windows Phone supports dual SIM models since version 8.1 (early April 2014). As a result, Nokia introduced some models as a dual SIM variant, among others. These are the Lumia 530 Dual-SIM models, as well as the Lumia 630 Dual-SIM model.

Dual SIM cell phones are widespread in developing countries, especially in Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Companies such as Karbonn Mobiles, LYF, Micromax and Cherry Mobile are bringing out feature phones and smartphones with multiple SIM slots.

The French company Wiko Mobile is an example of a manufacturer that specializes in the marketing of Chinese dual SIM cell phones, which are being sold under a new brand name in some European countries and in North West Africa.

variants

  • Dual SIM standby / Dual SIM dual standby:
Mobile phone with a transceiver (sender / receiver unit) in which both SIM cards are simultaneously logged into the network using a time division multiplex method (TDMA) and can receive or make calls. If a call is conducted via a SIM card, the second SIM card cannot be reached and data connections during the call can only be established through the active SIM card via LTE / UMTS, since the SIM card of the active line is the transceiver occupied.
If the mobile phone providers offer the necessary performance features , call forwarding (CF) can be activated via a menu on some models if the phone cannot be reached (e.g. "Dual SIM Always On"). A call to the SIM card that is currently inactive (e.g. SIM2) is now automatically forwarded to the telephone number of the active SIM card (SIM1), where you can basically knock and broker . If the forwarded call is accepted or forwarded to the mobile box of the active SIM card (SIM1), this forwarding incurs costs for the contract of the inactive SIM card (SIM2). This function could be the same or similar, but also directly with both providers, e.g. B. via USSD codes (also called GSM codes).
  • Dual-SIM-Active / Dual-SIM-Dual-Active / Dual-SIM-Full-Active:
Mobile phone with two independent transceivers (sender / receiver units). Both cards are ready to receive and send at the same time. Depending on the model and mobile network provider , call waiting and toggling calls between the two SIM cards are possible. However, it is not possible to have a three- way conference using both telephone numbers. It is also not possible to bundle the data connection of both SIM cards ( multipath TCP ). Rather, it must be decided in each case which card should be used for which action.

Many dual SIM devices have a main card, via which LTE / UMTS data connections can be established and UMTS calls can be made, as well as an auxiliary card that can only dial into the network via GSM / Edge and which may be blocked for data. In order to change the main card, the SIM cards of some devices that do not have a corresponding menu entry have to be removed from the switched-off device and replaced. However, dual-SIM dual standby devices are also available, which both have LTE / UMTS connections Allow SIM cards.

Some dual SIM devices have a hybrid slot for a second nano SIM card or a microSD card, so that they can be operated either with a second SIM card or with an SD card (as memory expansion). Such a hybrid slot is often referred to using the English word shared .

Models with more than two SIM cards

The placement of more than two SIM cards in one device is technically not a problem. However, in these devices, which were mostly manufactured in Asia up to around 2010, only two SIM cards can be used at the same time (fake 3 or 4 SIM cell phones / tri or quad SIM devices). Since around 2011 there have been real tri-SIM devices (for three) and quad-SIM devices (for four SIM cards) that allow all cards to be used simultaneously. These are also available in Germany through intermediaries.

In contrast to multi-SIM devices, with multi-SIM contracts (TriCard, TwinCard, SIM card duo) several identical SIM cards are issued for the same telephone number for parallel use in several devices.

Launch problems

Many mobile network providers try (t) to bind their customers to themselves, for example by means of term contracts or binding a subsidized device to a network card using a so-called SIM lock . They were not interested in selling dual SIM devices to their customers, because these enable the simultaneous and selective use of offers from different providers (and also the use of several networks, e.g. E-Netz and D-Netz). Since many tariffs represent a mixed calculation of relatively cheap and relatively expensive types of use, these providers have an interest in customers making all - including expensive - uses in the same tariff.

These facts could not prevent the market entry of dual SIM mobile phones. In the spring of 2008, a dozen different devices, some of them from well-known dealers, came onto the German and European markets.
