OnePlus is a Chinese smartphone manufacturer that was founded in December 2013. The head office is in Shenzhen , the managing director is Pete Lau. OnePlus is part of the Chinese BBK Electronics group.

history

OnePlus was founded on December 16, 2013 by Pete Lau, the former CEO of Oppo Electronics . OnePlus' motto, “Never Settle”, literally means “never settle down”, but as the company's motto it is to be understood in a figurative sense as “never to be satisfied”. On April 23, 2014, OnePlus released its first smartphone, the OnePlus One . The specialty of this smartphone was that it was delivered from the factory with the Android distribution CyanogenOS, which was the commercial offshoot of the custom ROM CyanogenMod , which is developed by the community and usually has to be installed by the user himself.

At the end of 2014, OnePlus and Cyanogen Inc., a company founded in the meantime with the aim of commercializing Cyanogen, ended their cooperation. OnePlus then began developing its own Android derivative under the name HydrogenOS (today OxygenOS ), in which numerous features known from CyanogenMod were adopted. For the further development of this operating system, developers who were previously involved in the development of the custom ROM Paranoid Android were taken over.

In 2015, the company presented two more devices: The OnePlus 2 and OnePlus X. The smartphones are sold and distributed outside of China exclusively via the manufacturer's website. All previous devices could initially only be purchased with a so-called "Invite", ie with a personalized invitation. In 2016, the successor to the OnePlus 2 came out, the OnePlus 3 . OnePlus did without the invite system for the first time with this model. In 2016, OnePlus began providing pre-release versions of operating system updates. Users can manually install and test these pre-release versions, known as “Community Build” or “Open Beta”. This is intended to improve the speed and stability of updates.

In November 2016, the company presented the Oneplus 3T, which uses the same housing, display and main camera as the OnePlus 3, but has more powerful processors, a front camera and a larger battery. The OnePlus 5 has been available since June 2017. The waiver of the fourth model is explained by the tetraphobia widespread in China , according to which four is an unlucky number.

In January 2018 it became known that the credit card details of around 40,000 customers had been stolen from the OnePlus online shop. According to the manufacturer, a malicious script was smuggled into the code for the payment process, which tapped the entered data directly from the browser and sent it to the author of the script.

The OnePlus 6 and 6T were presented in 2018, followed by the 7 and 7 Pro in 2019. The latter were something special in that for the first time there was a "Pro" version larger in terms of design and functionality. The OnePlus 7T and 7T Pro followed later in the year, two models for the first time there are also special editions of the 6T / 7T Pro in collaboration with McLaren .

On April 14, 2020, the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro were presented, due to the CoVID-19 pandemic, only as a web stream on their own website and on YouTube . The devices had relatively high prices compared to older generations, which is why a new budget model of the latest generation, the OnePlus Nord, was presented in an augmented reality show on July 21 of the same year . The documentation New Beginnings was published on this smartphone and its development process in three parts, each around ten minutes long .

User data collection

In October 2017 it became known that the proprietary OxygenOS operating system on OnePlus smartphones collects detailed and non-anonymized usage data and sends it to Chinese servers. Among the data was both the IMEI and phone number. This could not be switched off, but at most prevented by installing an alternative operating system ( custom ROM ). The collection of user data should then still have to be deactivated in October 2017, while the collection and transmission of device data, such as the usage time of individual apps, “to improve the operating system” are intended.
