The OnePlus 3 (also OnePlus Three ; abbreviated OP3 ) is a smartphone manufactured by OnePlus . It was presented on June 14, 2016 as the successor to the OnePlus 2 . In November 2016, the slightly improved successor model OnePlus 3T was presented.

The device was the first model from OnePlus that could be ordered directly from the manufacturer's website without the previously used invitation system (via Invites ) . Sales have now been discontinued in favor of the OnePlus 3T .

The prices for the 3T model were € 439 (64 GB) and € 479 (128 GB).

On May 25, 2017, the end of production of all variants of the 3T model in favor of the successor OnePlus 5 was announced in a forum post . This was presented on June 20, 2017. At the same time, the OnePlus 3T was discontinued on the manufacturer's website.

Design and technology

OnePlus 3

Compared to the OnePlus 2, the design of the OnePlus 3 is characterized by its lower weight and significantly less depth. It consists of a unibody housing made of aluminum and no longer has a removable back. The camera protrudes clearly from the back, and the 3.5 mm headphone jack has moved from the top to the bottom of the device. The display retains its size and resolution, but is now an AMOLED display with a PenTile arrangement of the subpixels. In contrast to the OnePlus 2, an NFC chip is also installed. On the release date, only the color "Graphite", a subtle shade of gray, was available. At the same time, another color variant, "Soft Gold", was announced, which has also been available since the second software update (OxygenOS 3.2.2).

Fast charge

In contrast to the OnePlus 2, the 3 can be charged quickly. The proprietary USB charging interface VOOC of Oppo Electronics , of OnePlus than English Dash batch , called the device can be charged within 30 minutes to 63%. However, this only works with the supplied cable and power supply unit, as the fast charging function is built into this.

software

The OnePlus 3 was shipped with OxygenOS 3.1.1 (based on Android 6.0.1), an Android derivative developed by OnePlus . At the end of December 2016, version 4.0 of OxygenOS was available, which was based on Android 7.0 "Nougat". Version 4.1.6, which was based on Android 7.1.1, was available since June 2017. In November 2017, OnePlus released version 5.0, which is based on Android 8.0.0. In August 2018, an update to Android 9 "Pie" for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T models was announced. On May 22, 2019, OnePlus finally started rolling out the OTA update to OxygenOS 9.0.2 (based on Android 9.0.0) for both devices.

Significant improvements compared to the previous model are the faster processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 instead of Qualcomm Snapdragon 820), the larger battery (3,400 mAh instead of 3,000 mAh) and a better front camera (16 MP instead of 8 MP). In addition, a 128 GB memory model (previously only 64 GB) was introduced, which is only available in the likewise new “Gunmetal” color. The case and the dimensions have been adopted unchanged from the predecessor. However, the SAR values ​​have increased significantly and are now given as 0.893 W / kg (head) and 1.254 W / kg (body). The reason for a successor model after only six months was the poor availability of some components of the OnePlus 3.

The OnePlus 3 / 3T was received positively by criticism and customers and, due to its technical data and workmanship, was often counted among the best devices of 2016. In particular, the price-performance ratio was praised.

Trivia

In March 2017, a special version of the 3T was offered in cooperation with the French designer label Colette . It was a special model limited to 250 units with 128 GB memory in the color Midnight Black , which was provided with a Colette logo on the underside. This model was only available directly in the Colette store in Paris on March 21, 2017, the regular price was € 479. Due to the unexpectedly high demand, another limited batch of the 128GB model in "midnight black" without Colette lettering was subsequently offered in the regular OnePlus online shop, which was sold out in a very short time.
