particularities

The HTC One (M8) is a smartphone from HTC that was presented on March 25, 2014 as the successor to the HTC One, which was still being produced in parallel . The sales start in Germany was on April 4, 2014. It has a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor 801 with 2.3 GHz and 2 GB RAM. The 5 inch (approx. 12.7 cm) screen has a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. The operating system is Android version 4.4 (currently 6.0), with the user interface HTC Sense 6 ("SixthSense") or Windows Phone 8.1.

The successor, the HTC One M9 , was presented on March 1, 2015. In addition to the HTC One M9, there is also a new edition of the HTC One (M8) with new components. The HTC One M8s has an improved rear camera with a significantly higher resolution (13 megapixels instead of 4 megapixels), a battery capacity increased by around 10% and a weaker eight-core processor with 64-bit architecture. The barometer sensor and the infrared interface are not required on the M8s.

Furnishing

The One has two cameras on the back, one of which has a resolution of 4.1 megapixels and is equipped with HTC's ultrapixel technology. The second camera only has a resolution of 2.1 megapixels, but only saves depth information, for example to enable subsequent focusing. Other functions include “waking up” the smartphone by tapping twice on the display or by swiping across the display in stand-by mode.

The device can film in 1080p at 60 still images per second, but the resolution of the image sensor for 2160p (4K) is too low.

Tests and criticism

The HTC One (M8) generally scores very well in tests. Inside-handy.de, for example, praises the good workmanship, the display and the long-lasting battery. However, it is criticized that the housing is too large in relation to the display. In addition, the camera of the basic model (M8) disappoints the high expectations.

variants

On July 2, 2014, a press release from HTC Germany announced that a dual SIM version of the M8 would be introduced in the 28th calendar week of the year in Germany, Austria and Switzerland at a price of € 679. The model is only available with 16 GB of internal memory, offers space for two nano SIMs for dual standby mode and also offers memory expansion via microSD . The supported cellular frequencies differ from the conventional model. In particular, the LTE band 20 (800 MHz), which is used in Germany, is not supported. The only available color is called “Gunmetal Gray”. The software corresponds to that of the standard model, with the exception of the addition of dual SIM settings and was updated to Android Lollipop (5.0.2) in May 2015 , three months after the standard version received it.

On August 18, 2014, HTC and Verizon Wireless announced a new variant of the M8 under the name "HTC One (M8) for Windows", which runs with a version of Windows Phone 8.1 instead of Android as the operating system. This device is the first HTC with Windows Phone since the 8X from 2012. The hardware is almost identical to the Android version, apart from small deviations in color and branding. The device offers in-house developments under Sense, which are embedded in Windows Phone, such as BlinkFeed and the Duo Camera or support for the Dot View Cover. The development of the “M8 for Windows” was made possible by changes to the platform by Microsoft . This should allow more flexibility and variety in design and support for software keys. This enabled manufacturers to bring their Android devices to market with Windows Phone without major changes.
