The Blackberry Keyone ( spelling : BlackBerry KEYone ) is an Android smartphone from the Blackberry brand . The device previously had the working title "Mercury" and was presented in 2017 ahead of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The smartphone is manufactured and sold by the electronics company TCL , which acquired the rights to the Blackberry brand in 2016. Special attention was paid to the new release due to the permanently installed hardware keyboard in combination with Android as the operating system. This was also evident in the pre-orders: according to TCL, the Keyone is said to have broken all records compared to the previous models. The manufacturer himself describes the Keyone as "the most secure Android phone on the market".

design

The Blackberry Keyone is set in an anodized aluminum frame and has a non-slip plastic surface with a carbon pattern on the back. The classic Blackberry logo is also shown on the back. It weighs 180 grams, making it a little lighter than the Blackberry Priv . The corners at the bottom are rounded. It is equipped with a main and front camera. The jack plug for the headphones was integrated into the frame at the top left. A signal LED on the front can inform the user about new calls or messages if necessary. The push button for switching the device on and off is located on the left side of the housing; on the opposite side, the buttons for louder , quieter and a freely configurable button (so-called convenience key ) are arranged in the order from top to bottom . The slot for the nano-SIM card was positioned at the top right end, a tool supplied is required to open it. At the lower end of the smartphone, the charging cable can be connected to the USB type C port. The capacitive keys for operating the Android operating system are arranged next to each other directly above the physical keyboard. The keyboard itself has a shiny finish, the rows of letters are separated from each other by a decorative strip made of aluminum.

hardware

keyboard

The manufacturer has equipped the Blackberry Keyone with a physical keyboard that is permanently and permanently visible on the lower end of the display without a sliding mechanism. The rows of keys are based on the classic design of a PC keyboard (in Germany with a QWERTZ layout) and are also touch-sensitive. The background is automatically illuminated as soon as the ambient light falls below a certain threshold. As with the previous models, the buttons are traditionally beveled to make them easier to use. The operating system can be controlled with different gestures, for example by the user with the finger directly on the keyboard to the left or right "wipes" (English. Swipe ). In the application, a website can thus be scrolled in any direction in the browser without the user having to touch the screen. In text fields there is also the option of accepting a suggested word with an upward swiping gesture - a key does not have to be actively pressed. In addition to its actual function, the space bar at the bottom can also be used as a fingerprint sensor to unlock the device. Two integrated light-emitting diodes notify the user of the status of the action. Furthermore, each key can be assigned a double function that can be executed in the start menu: the system differentiates between short and long presses on the key. If the aforementioned action is triggered, the user can run a predefined app without having to search through the app selection. A total of 52 different actions can theoretically be configured. In this context, the keys can also be assigned a special contact in the integrated phone book, or a message history can be called up.

camera

Similar to the Pixel , an Android smartphone from Google , the same camera sensor is built into the Keyone. The main camera enables recordings with max. 12 megapixels and an f / 2.0 aperture . Videos can be recorded in 4K . The front camera is positioned on the front, the recordings with max. 8 megapixels allowed. The cameras can each be controlled with a flash, the main camera on the back also with dual flash. This can also be operated as a torch.

Battery life

The components of the device were especially designed for long battery life. According to the manufacturer, the comparatively large battery with 3505  mAh , in combination with the Snapdragon chipset, enables up to 576 hours of standby mode (also: standby mode). With average use, the Keyone should be operational for up to 2 days at a time. The continuous talk time is estimated at 17 hours, although the battery life under full load with continuous video playback is also given in test reports as 20 hours. The runtime results from the interaction of the processor optimized for power requirements, the large battery and the split display, which does not take up the entire surface of the device due to the attached keyboard.

operating system

The operating system is Android 7.1.1. Pre-installed nougat. The system was adapted by Blackberry both to the special design of the device and to the needs of business customers. Due to the structural conditions, a virtual keyboard is obsolete and is therefore not displayed, except for entering special characters.

Apps

In contrast to older Blackberry smartphones with Blackberry OS10 , all listed apps can be installed on the Keyone using Google's Playstore . In the course of adapting the system, Blackberry implemented native keyboard support in Android apps so that the virtual keyboard is not additionally displayed in established messengers such as WhatsApp . In the example of Whatsapp, a message can also be sent using the Enter key without selecting the action on the screen. In addition to the apps from the Playstore, Blackberry has integrated its own applications:

  • BlackBerry Hub was taken over from the in-house system and also bundles all short messages, phone calls and e-mails in one view under Android
  • DTEK as a security center with functions for monitoring and controlling the operating system
  • Calendar, password manager, file manager, phone book and notes

particularities

With the help of the BlackBerry pop-up widgets , individual functions in apps can be called up directly via the start screen using a swiping gesture. There is also the option of a so-called productivity tab in the form of a narrow bar permanently - even in running apps - on the right or left side of the display. This can also be activated with a swiping gesture, whereupon, for example, new messages, calendar entries or contacts can be viewed without having to leave the active app. Further user-defined functions can be set up using the freely configurable button, the convenience key .

safety

The Keyone is additionally secured in terms of hardware and software. On the one hand, Blackberry has integrated a so-called “ Root of Trust” concept, which runs through a procedure every time the operating system is started that checks the components and software for security-relevant integrity. This is guaranteed with the help of security keys in the processor. The device cannot be “rooted”, software applications that are not part of the system (e.g. jailbreaks ) are excluded so that the native security functions cannot be compromised. On the software side, the "DTEK" application is also preinstalled in every device, which allows targeted influence on the transfer of data in the respective apps. In addition, both the operating system and the privacy settings are permanently monitored by DTEK. The user can also use a points system to find out about the given security or make appropriate settings to improve it. In the course of the release, Blackberry promised to offer monthly security updates, unlike other manufacturers. For corporate customers, advanced enterprise solutions are also offered to protect confidential data in a targeted manner or to separate it from private conversations.

various

  • Between the first product presentation and the official launch, the Blackberry Keyone appeared in a scene from the television series Last Man Standing .
  • In Germany, the device was already released for sale in retail outlets in the United States on May 16, 2017.
