Palm Treo
Treo is originally a family of smartphones on the Palm OS -based company Handspring . After the merger of Handspring with Palm, Inc. to palmOne , development took place under the direction of palmOne (now again under the name Palm ). Newer Treo models from this period use the in-house Palm OS as well as the Windows Mobile operating system .
Treo 90
The Treo 90 was the last "pure" organizer from Handspring (without a telephone). It was the first device after the Prism to offer a color display, this time with 4096 colors. Thanks to a slightly smaller display, the dimensions and weight of the PDA have been reduced: 113 grams at 10.8 cm × 7.1 cm × 1.6 cm. Special features of the device were the keyboard, which is still unusual for a Palm OS PDA, as in the smartphone models, the front flap with a window for the display and the switch to an SD card slot (the compact dimensions would not be too large with a springboard slot have been achieved). The Treo 90 Palm OS 4.1 was the first handspring device to offer, while later models also appeared with the 3.5 version. A novelty that can also be found in later Treos was the telephone book, in which for the first time numbers could be found by entering the first letters of a name.
Treo 180 / 180g
The devices Treo 180 and 180g published in early 2002. This had a built-in dual band - GSM cellphone. While the Treo 180 ventured towards a small but complete keyboard, the 180 g for “conservative” graffiti users did without it. This was noticeable in the weight (140 grams instead of 147 grams for the 180), but not in the dimensions (both 10.8 cm × 7.1 cm × 2.1 cm). The equipment with Palm OS 3.5.2H4, 16 gray levels at 160 × 160 pixels, 33 MHz CPU and lithium-ion battery corresponded to earlier PDAs. However, the telephony functions that Handspring integrated were outstanding - there was even a speakerphone in the first Treo smartphone. The Treos 180 series were the first Palm OS smartphones available in Germany. Quality problems (defects in processing, high failure rate) prevented the smartphone from breaking through, and no partner could be found with the major mobile network operators - corresponding announcements from Viag Interkom were not implemented. GPRS does not work out of the box, but was later supplied by Handspring as a free update.
Treo 270/300
In terms of performance data, the Treo 270 corresponded to the Treo 180, which was published about three months earlier, but came with the color display that was also used in the Treo 90. Except for a weight about 5 grams higher than the 180, there are hardly any differences. However, the devices were equipped with a more powerful battery, so that the operating time when switching from the black and white to the color display did not deteriorate as was usual at the time, but improved significantly. The Treo 300 version was a CDMA2000 model and was therefore of no interest for the German market. No mobile network partner could be found for the Treo 270 either. Production of the Treo 270 was discontinued in summer 2004, and support continues to suffer from the subsequent merger of Handspring with Palm to palmOne: Support pages no longer exist or are redirected to the palmOne start page, which are SDKs for software developers difficult to find etc.
Treo 500 / 500v
The Treo 500v is the first and only Palm device without a touchscreen. It has a QWERTY keyboard and runs the Windows Mobile 6 Standard operating system. It was intended to be the “little” brother of the Treo 750.

Treo 600
The last handspring device ever should be a smartphone again. In contrast to all other models in the Treo series, the Treo 600 had no flap and ran on Palm OS 5 (Garnet, more precisely: 5.2.1H). As a quad-band mobile phone, the Treo 600 can be used almost anywhere in the world. As the first smartphone from Handspring, it offered an SD expansion slot that is otherwise only available on the Treo 90 (see above). 32 MB RAM and 144 MHz processor ensured significantly shorter latency times when switching between applications and when typing. The five-way navigator simplified the operation, with the integrated digital camera at least snapshots can be taken (or, for example, the ambient brightness can be measured and the background lighting adjusted accordingly). At 168 grams, the Treo 600 was not a lightweight, but thanks to the round case it was comfortable to hold. Dimensions: 11.2 cm × 6 cm × 2.2 cm, so Handspring was able to make the device narrower. Due to the enormously high prices and the very late introduction in Europe, this device also failed to make its big breakthrough. Technically, it could not quite keep up with the current devices of the competition; The Treo 600 lacked a high-resolution display and a built-in Bluetooth interface (data exchange had to take place via a USB cable). These deficiencies have been eliminated in the successor Treo 650 , which, however, already appeared under the direction of palmOne.
Treo 650
The Treo 650 has been on the US market since the fourth quarter of 2004 (only sold by the US telephone company Sprint Nextel until the end of 2004 ) and, unlike its predecessors, has a high-resolution display (320 × 320 pixels ), Bluetooth Support, EDGE , non-volatile RAM ( NVFS ), a faster 312 MHz processor and an improved VGA digital camera . A CDMA2000 version of the Treo 650 is also available in the US.
The device had been on the market in Germany since March 10, 2005. After the device was presented in an article on Golem.de, it was initially speculated for a long time whether the smartphone would even be offered by one of the four German mobile network operators . The Treo 650 has been available from e-Plus since summer 2005 .
Since the smartphone contains substances that are no longer permitted according to the European RoHS regulation passed in January 2003, it has no longer been allowed to be sold in Europe since July 1, 2006. Only old stocks are exempt from this ban.
The management of the newly introduced non-volatile memory using NVFS caused negative headlines immediately after the sales launch ( Heise Newsticker ): The Treo 650 stored data much more inefficiently than the nominally equivalent predecessor model, the Treo 600, so that there was less memory available for the user. Palm then included a 128 MB SD card with a number of purchases and finally provided a patch that finally solved the problem.

Treo 680

The smartphone looks similar to the 750v (especially without antenna stubs); it is also available in four colors (at least in the US). Although it was not presented as the successor to the Treo 650, the Treo 680 is considered to be the successor after the 650 was stopped in Europe (see above). Most of the changes are of an optical nature, with the exception of the larger memory, Bluetooth 1.2 instead of 1.1 and the optical improvements. Unfortunately, the battery life is far behind that of the Treo 650 - even after a software update. In principle, the Treo 680 was intended to address customers who had not or did not want to buy a smartphone before.
The lack of WLAN and UMTS support (also not upgradeable) were named as points of criticism after the presentation; It is also noticeable that Palm continued to use the PalmOS 5. However, it should not be forgotten that WLAN and UMTS were previously hardly available in a smartphone and that the PalmOS has been significantly expanded compared to the original version.
In early 2008, Palm released a firmware update for the Treo 680. This updates a number of components of the operating system. In most applications, the update results in improved battery life and device reliability. In addition, some previously published updates and patches have been included, such as support for direct push for Exchange Active Sync accounts in the e-mail client.
Immediately after the Treo 680 update to version 2.12, Palm launched the Centro for GSM networks. This essentially offers the functionality of the Treo 680, but in a much smaller housing.
Treo 700w
The Treo 700w was introduced on September 25, 2005 and has been available in the US since January 5, 2006 from the wireless provider Verizon . In contrast to the other Treo models, it is currently only available in one version for the American CDMA2000 network. It is unclear whether a GSM variant will ever be available. The Treo 700w is the first Palm organizer to use Windows Mobile 5.0 instead of the Palm OS. The reasons for the change in operating system were not disclosed, but it can be assumed that the provider wanted a smartphone with the Windows operating system (which has now overtaken Palm OS in terms of market share) and that the Treos can be operated well.
The technical data are good for a Windows Mobile smartphone, but modest compared to newer Windows Mobile handhelds:

Centro
On September 27, 2007, Palm introduced the Centro in the United States . It is almost identical to the Treo 680, except that it is slightly smaller and the camera offers a higher resolution. The Palm Centro has been available in Germany since March 2008. In particular, the software has not been significantly changed, but the Google Maps map service is included. Because the Centro has neither a GPS receiver nor a WLAN module, it can only determine its position using GSM radio towers or external GPS receivers.
Even the Centro does not correct the image of Palm, according to which the company has offered a more or less unchanged hardware and software platform for years (albeit with ongoing price reductions), and according to which the formerly very innovative company is no longer able to face the competition to stand up to the smartphone market with real new developments.
In January 2009, however, Palm introduced the Palm Pre smartphone with the completely redesigned WebOS operating system .
Treo Pro
The Treo Pro was available as the "Treo 850" in the USA as a CDMA device.
