Maemo is an operating system for mobile devices and a development platform for programming applications for Nokia Internet tablets and other Maemo-compliant handhelds . The platform initiated by Nokia consists largely of customized free software that it has in common with many Linux distributions. Maemo was intended as an alternative to Palm OS or its successor webOS , Windows CE , Symbian OS or Android .

Maemo is based on the Linux kernel and the free desktop Gnome . Nokia also appeared as a sponsor of the GNOME project in this context.

With the takeover of Trolltech in 2008, Nokia had GTK + competitor Qt in-house. Since maemo 5.0, Qt has been offered in parallel with GTK + .

At the Mobile World Congress in February 2010 it was announced that Maemo should be merged with Intel's Moblin platform to form the new MeeGo project . In September 2011, Intel announced that MeeGo and LiMo should continue as Tizen .

Hildon desktop

The GTK + framework of the project, which is optimized for handheld use, bears the name " Hildon ". It differs from the GNOME framework in particular in that it does not use heavy-weight packages such as Bonobo , since mobile devices have less memory than PCs or laptops.
