MeeGo is a Linux- based, open-source operating system that should be used in smartphones , handhelds , tablets , netbooks , smart TVs and cars . It is a merger of Nokia's Maemo operating system with Intel's Moblin project. The project is based at the Linux Foundation . MeeGo is a multi- platform project and supports the x86 / Intel-Atom and ARM architectures . The transfer to other hardware platforms is possible at any time. In September 2011 it was announced that MeeGo will merge with LiMo in the new Tizen project . Former employees of Nokia founded the company Jolla , which MeeGo is actively developing under the name SailfishOS .

Components of the system

The MeeGo 1.1 Core Software Platform includes the Linux kernel 2.6.35, the standard file system Btrfs , Nokia's UI framework Qt 4.7, DeviceKit and udev for the hardware interfaces . In addition, X.org , a telephony and a Bluetooth stack and media frameworks are part of the system. The so-called MeeGo Netbook User Experience and the Handset User Experience are based on the core platform . Google's Chrome browser will be used in the MeeGo Netbook User Experience and Mozilla's Fennec browser will be used in the Handset User Experience . Programs for MeeGo are offered and distributed as RPM program packages.

Version history

MeeGo was announced in February 2010 during the Mobile World Congress . A first developer version was presented in April 2010, the official version 1.0 of the core system and the netbook user experience followed at the end of May 2010. A preliminary version of a handset version for Intel Atom-based devices that already contained some of the planned controls and applications , came on June 30, 2010, as did an early development version for the ARM-based Nokia N900 . Version 1.1 was released on October 28, 2010. New versions were planned every 6 months. Intermediate versions for developers were made available weekly. The last release was version 1.2 released on May 19, 2011; Release updates were last released on February 9, 2012 as MeeGo v1.2.0.6 .

Cooperations and planned uses

So far, a number of companies have pledged their support for MeeGo, including a. Acer , AMD , ASUSTeK , BMW Group , Cisco , DeviceVM ( Splashtop ), LG , Mandriva , Novell , Orange , Telefónica and Xandros . The reference platform for infotainment systems in vehicles, GENIVI, designed by BMW and various partners, is to be based on MeeGo. The 1.0 developer release of MeeGo was also made available in a version for use in vehicles. Nokia itself originally wanted to equip future “mobile computers” with MeeGo. ASUSTeK , the fifth largest manufacturer of mobile computers, also wants to use MeeGo in the future. In June 2010, prototypes of MeeGo-based tablets from Intel, Wistron and CS2C were on display at Computex . On September 3, 2010, WeTab GmbH announced that the WeTab tablet PC, developed in cooperation with Neofonie , will be marketed as the first tablet with an operating system based on MeeGo.

In February 2011, Nokia announced that it wanted to work closely with Microsoft in the future and only wanted to bring the MeeGo device Nokia N9 onto the market in 2011 and then rely on the Windows Phone 7 operating system . Intel was surprised and disappointed by this decision, but wants to stick to the development. Previously, developers had heard that the netbook version was being scaled back. In June 2011, Nokia officially introduced the Nokia N9, which will appear later this year with MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan. In August 2011 it was announced that the Nokia N9 with the MeeGo operating system would not be sold in the USA, Great Britain and Germany.

In August 2011, ASUS launched the EeePC X101, the first netbook with MeeGo as the operating system on the German market. It is the thinnest and lightest member of the EeePC series to date. Also in August 2011, Acer announced a notebook with pre-installed MeeGo, which will be released in September of the same year.

At the end of September 2011 it was announced that LiMo will also merge with the Meego project. The new project will be called Tizen . In addition, former employees of Nokia founded the company Jolla , which MeeGo is actively developing under the name SailfishOS .

Derivatives

Some Linux distributions have announced that they will support the MeeGo interface, e.g. B. Fedora , Linpus Linux and Splashtop .

openSUSE

A version of openSUSE with the MeeGo interface is already available, which is called Smeegol. OpenSUSE's GoblinTeam is realizing this project.

successor

After the break in the cooperation between Intel and Nokia and the end of MeeGo, there are several follow-up projects.

Mer project

Following Tizen's announcement, members of the MeeGo community revived the Mer project. Originally founded to port new Maemo versions to older hardware, the new Mer community sees itself as a continuation of MeeGo. In contrast to MeeGo, Mer's core distribution no longer has its own interface. The old MeeGo user interface will be continued under the company's own Nemo project. With this decoupling, the developers expect faster support for new hardware components, as well as hardware-independent development of the user interface. Due to the lack of a user interface, Mer-Core is not a complete Meego derivative. In addition, Mer-Core only supports 302 of the 1400 Meego packages. Current package numbers can be seen on the Git page for Mer-Core. In May 2013 there were 393 packages under Mer-Core, as well as 59 Mer-Crosshelper packages and 37 Mer-Tool packages. During the same period, around 3,000 packages from over 100 developers were hosted in the Open Build Service instance of the Mer project. However, this must not be confused with the number of Mer-Core packages above, as the Build Service hosts additional hardware and software packages that are not part of Mer-Core, such as the packages of the Nemo user interface.

Mer serves as the basis for Jolla's Sailfish OS and the Vivaldi tablet , among other things . This is a tablet PC that does not use Nemo, but Plasma Active as the standard interface.

In March 2019 it was announced that the SailfishOS project Jolla comes together with the Mer project.

Sailfish OS

In June 2012 it was announced that former Nokia employees had founded a new company called Jolla to bring new MeeGo-based devices to the market. Jolla uses Mer as a basis for this and only calls it MeeGo for reasons of public awareness. Marc Dillon, who previously led the development of MeeGo at Nokia, also has a stake in the company, which is based in Finland .

On November 21, 2012 Jolla presented the Mer-based operating system Sailfish OS, the first devices were announced for the 2nd quarter of 2013. Sailfish OS is designed to support running apps that were originally written for Android. In fact, the first Jolla phone was presented in May 2013. It has a dual-core processor , 16 gigabytes of internal memory and supports LTE networks .

In February 2018 it was announced that Jolla is bringing SailfishOS 3 to Feature Phones. The target market is primarily India.

Tizen

Tizen is the successor to MeeGo and LiMo recommended by MeeGo co-founder Intel and LiMo Foundation founding member Samsung Electronics . The smartphone version of Tizen is largely based on the Samsung Linux Platform (SLP) / LiMo 4 and uses Enlightenment Foundation Libraries (EFL) instead of Qt. This variant is primarily supported by Samsung.

The IVI version of Tizen continues to use Qt and is mainly sponsored by Intel. Since May 20th 2013 there is also a community port of Qt 5.1 for Tizen.
