LG webOS is both an operating system for various computer-based devices such as smartphones , tablet computers , smart TVs , smart displays , electronic billboards etc. as well as an IoT platform . The webOS Open Source Edition (webOS OSE) is an open source edition of the system under Apache license .

The one on the Linux kernel aufsetzende system uses WebKit and web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.) to provide a graphical environment that the operation via capacitive touch screen by touch Multi Gestures is designed. The name webOS stands for the deep integration of web technologies and internet services.

LG acquired HP webOS from HP , which had bought Palm , which originally developed Palm webOS - as the successor to the Palm OS . At that time, HP did not develop webOS seriously, but published an open source version of the system, Open webOS, for the first time . When it was sold to LG, HP kept the patents on webOS, which have now been transferred to Qualcomm .

On the basis of Open webOS, LuneOS was created , an offshoot developed by the WebOS Ports Community, in which many components from Open webOS are currently being replaced by corresponding components from webOS OSE.

development

The last public version 5.4 of Palm OS only supported two connection profiles and therefore no additional UMTS or integrated GPS for smartphones (with GPRS and Bluetooth ) . As a result, the hardware equipment of the later Palm devices could no longer keep up with that of other manufacturers. Palm therefore developed the new webOS operating system under the code name Nova . The name is representative of the deep integration of Internet services and the integration of web technologies into the Linux-based operating system and user interface.

The operating system was presented together with the first smartphone at the Consumer Electronics Show on January 8, 2009 in Las Vegas , the Palm Pre was released in June 2009.

On August 18, 2011, Palm's new owner, HP, announced that it had stopped developing webOS-based devices; In 2012, it was published by HP as open source software.

features

WebOS is a multitasking operating system based on the Linux kernel . The graphical user interface was developed on the basis of WebKit . Several applications that are open at the same time can be browsed through a live preview. It is operated using finger gestures on a touchscreen . The operating system is optimized for simple interaction with Internet services and has extensive functions for the use of online services such as online data storage, calendar, contact management and social networks .

Synergy

All PIM data is stored on the device and constantly updated with internet services such as B. Gmail synced. With the help of a technology called Synergy , all information, for example from different calendar systems such as Exchange and Google Calendar, can be clearly summarized in one application. Synergy links contact data, calendar events and e-mails from various sources (including Exchange, Gmail, Hotmail , Yahoo , Facebook ).

Notifications

A notification manager is used to display reminders or events such as new e-mails in the lower area of the screen, the “notification bar”, and to reduce the size of the program window above. The current application is neither left nor disturbed with messages. Any notification that requires user input (incoming call, calendar reminder, alarm clock, etc.) can be silenced without being explicitly discarded (ringtone turned off, new reminder, etc.). In this case, the icons remain in the notification bar. HP Palm calls this “unobtrusive notifications”, alluding to Apple's “push notification”, which prior to iOS version 5 only allowed an immediate response or a rejection of the notification.

App Catalog

The HP App Catalog offered apps for each webOS device. The app catalog for operating system versions for smartphones contains several thousand, the version 3.x for the HP touchpad a few thousand applications, including one for the Amazon Kindle and Office programs. Once purchased, applications for the smartphone are automatically installed on the HP touchpad when the profile is synchronized and run there in an emulated environment. In June 2011, HP introduced a digital magazine called webOS Pivot , which featured various apps in editorial articles. This magazine was discontinued in November 2011 as part of the strategy change.

Web browser

The web browser in webOS uses the open source rendering library WebKit like the user interface . The browser can display Flash content on the website and in screen size and supports multi-touch gestures. Alternative browsers are also available in the app catalog.

Software development

An SDK called Mojo Application Framework can be used to develop applications in HTML5 , CSS, and JavaScript . In 2011, HP replaced the Mojo Framework with Enyo, with some additional functions.

Ares is an additional integrated development environment with which applications can be developed directly in the browser. An installation of the SDK is no longer necessary. In order to be able to test the applications, a webOS emulator is integrated in Ares. Ares works with Firefox, Safari and Chrome web browsers.

Since June 2014 LG has been offering the "webOS TV SDK".

Plug-In Development Kit (PDK)

Since March 2010, the “Plug-In Development Kit” has also offered the option of using C or C ++ code in applications for porting existing applications from other platforms.

WebOS is not backward compatible with Palm OS, but there is a "Classic" emulator for Palm OS programs, which, according to product manager Paul Cousineau, can run Palm OS applications on the Pre. The manufacturer of "Classic", the company MotionApps, has sold the software to Palm and stopped selling the application. MotionApps states that "Classic" can no longer run under webOS 2.

equipment

  • Palm Pre (webOS 1.x) and Palm Pre Plus (webOS 1.x and 2.x): The first device that was shipped with webOS was the Palm Pre. Delivery began on June 6, 2009 in the USA in cooperation with the network operator Sprint Nextel . In Germany, the Palm Pre was available from October 13, 2009 at O2 and Simyo . The Palm Pre Plus was presented at CES 2010, which compared to its predecessor had twice as much memory (512 MB) and storage space (16 GB).
  • Palm Pixi and Palm Pixi Plus (webOS 1.x): In autumn 2009, Palm launched the second smartphone with webOS, the Palm Pixi , in the USA. It was characterized by the fact that it had a keyboard under a scaled-down capacitive touchscreen without a slider mechanism. The Palm Pixi Plus was presented together with the Palm Pre Plus at CES 2010. In contrast to its predecessor, it received WLAN support and was available in Germany from O2 and Vodafone.
  • Palm Pre 2 (webOS 2.x): The successor model of the Palm Pre Plus should, with improved workmanship, for the first time with a screen made from the Corning Gorilla Glass, as is common in high-quality smartphones such as the iPhone, and revised hardware and software, take some criticisms of the previous devices into account wear. Available since October 2010.
  • HP Veer (webOS 2.x): A greatly reduced version of the Palm Pre 2 with a 2.6-inch touchscreen (320 × 400 pixels) with updated hardware and software. The HP Veer was the smallest smartphone with its range of functions, continued to support the HP Touchstone for inductive charging and had a connection for a magnetic charging cable. The device appeared with a very long delay. With the discontinuation of development by HP, all devices were sold at a greatly reduced price (in Germany 60 euros per device) in 2011.
  • HP Pre 3 (webOS 2.x), as the successor model of the Palm Pre 2, which was never released in the USA, the appearance of this device was planned as a result of the start of sales of the HP Veer. The smartphone with a 3.58-inch touchscreen (800 × 480 pixels) ultimately only went on sale in its GSM version in France and later in Germany and Great Britain in small numbers. The devices already manufactured for AT&T and Verizon in the USA could no longer be sold. In Europe, all available devices were sold within a very short time at greatly reduced prices (in Germany 80 euros per device).
  • HP TouchPad (webOS 3.x), a 9.7-inch tablet (1024 × 768 pixel capacitive Gorilla Glass touchscreen) in versions with 16 GB and 32 GB storage space and 1 GB RAM, WLAN and Bluetooth and 2-core -Processor, which on the software side has in particular received the functions Touch to share , the exchange of information with webOS telephones by tapping and with webOS 3.0 a completely revised software version. The HP touchpad integrates seamlessly with a webOS smartphone connected via Bluetooth in the vicinity. The manufacture of the device was stopped by HP a few weeks after its publication. The devices produced were sold at greatly reduced prices, initially in the USA and then in Europe within a very short time. Software updates continued to be delivered after the production stop.

Takeover by LG

On August 18, 2011 HP announced the end of tablets and smartphones with webOS under the leadership of Léo Apotheker . On December 9, 2011, HP's new CEO Meg Whitman announced the release of WebOS as open source software.

In October 2012 it became known that LG was working on a television with Open WebOS as the software platform. WebOS was bought by LG in February 2013. In January 2014, LG presented the first TVs with WebOS.
