history

OpenZaurus was developed as an alternative operating system image for the Sharp Zaurus PDA. The original intention of the project was to create an image that was more in line with the needs of the developer community than the original Sharp image. In the beginning, this SharpROM was simply taken as the starting point and based on it, changes were made, errors eliminated, software added or even removed in order to make the entire package more free .

A short time later it was redesigned from the ground up and for a long time was a Debian- based embedded Linux distribution. In this regard, OpenZaurus was and is quite similar to other Debian-based embedded Linux distributions such as B. Familiar Linux for the iPaq . In fact, both projects are now based on the OpenEmbedded build system , which provides the software base and the "build system" for both distributions (and many other embedded systems).

On April 26, 2007 it was announced that work on OpenZaurus will be discontinued in favor of the Ångström project.
