Zaurus is an electronic organizer series from Sharp , which is equipped with an illuminated touchscreen , a QWERTY keyboard layout and a PCMCIA card slot for expansion .

With the later generations of the Zaurus ("SL" xxx) Sharp switched to Linux as the operating system and marketed it as a personal mobile tool .

history

Zaurus organizers of the ZR-3000 to ZR-5800 series followed the successful Sharp IQ organizer series from around 1997 . Thanks to the new, backlit touchscreen (backlight only on the top model ZR-5800), it was now possible for the first time for the display to be legible even in poor lighting conditions and therefore to work with an organizer. However, the display lighting increased the energy consumption, so a Zaurus now needs two AA Mignon cells instead of the IQ series with two AAA micro cells. In terms of weight and size, the Zaurus was therefore much more unwieldy than an IQ organizer.

The PCMCIA card slot newly introduced by Zaurus organizers made it possible to use commercially available PCMCIA cards to expand the memory. The disadvantage of this innovation, however, was that earlier expensive Sharp organizer expansion cards were no longer compatible. Zaurus organizers of the ZR series can send and receive faxes with an external (cellular) modem , and it is also possible to install third-party software. Since the Zaurus-ZR series lacks TCP / IP , this model series is not suitable for the Internet.
