The Japanese company Sharp referred to the later models in its Zaurus series as Personal Mobile Tool, or PMT for short . The Zaurus was the most popular PMT in Japan in 2003 and used a proprietary operating system . The first Sharp PMT based on a GNU / Linux variant, Embedix Plus, was the SL-5000D. Compared to smartphones , PMTs do not have an integrated cellular phone.

As CPU come ARM StrongARM - and Intel XScale - processors for the modern variants used. The devices also have CompactFlash and SD card slots, an infrared interface and a keyboard.

Qtopia from Qt Software is supplied as the graphical user interface for the more modern Linux PMT variants . Alternatively, the free OPIE can be installed. Both surfaces use a framebuffer . On the other hand, the GPE interface, which is also free, can come up with a real X11 server and a slim window manager . OpenBSD can also be installed.

Even the SL-5000D has enough power to serve as a LAMP server. It is also very popular with ward drivers . With a WLAN card , the Zaurus can be used as a WLAN sniffer as well as a WLAN client or wireless access point .

The last device to appear in Germany was the Zaurus 5500G, after which Sharp announced its withdrawal from the European PDA market, with legal problems being the most likely cause. In 2003 Sharp launched the SL-C 700, SL-C 750, SL-C 760 and SL-C 860 models on the Japanese market, which thanks to their revolutionary design concept (“clamshell”) with a high-resolution 3.8-inch display with 640 × 480 pixels ) quickly achieved great popularity and have now also found importers to Europe and America. From 2004 to 2005 the SL-6000 model with a 10 cm display was also available in Germany, but not from Sharp. As successors to these devices, the models SL-C1000, SL-C3000, SL-C3100 and SL-C3200 are now on the market, which have a USB host as an innovation . This enables the connection and operation of almost any USB device on the Zaurus, e.g. B. an external hard drive, a burner or a keyboard. The 3000 series is also equipped with an internal microdrive .
