Open Palmtop Integrated Environment (OPIE) is a free graphical user environment for PDAs based on the GNU / Linux - operating system . It uses widely used standards such as XML , OBEX and IrDA . Since August 4th, 2003 version 1.0 for Sharp Zaurus , Siemens SIMpad and HP iPAQ is available in several languages. The surface can be adapted to personal taste with themes and styles.

Applications for:

  • Document management
  • Internet : IRC client and the Konqueror web browser
  • Multimedia : opieplayer2 can display images and can stream audio and video data and is based on xine
  • Network : data synchronization with Kolab , Outlook and the Qtopia desktop
  • Office : PDF viewer, PalmDoc reader
  • The Personal Information Manager (PIM) includes address book, task list, notebook, e-mail, organizer, text editor and search. It is also possible to communicate with Palm OS PDAs or Pocket PCs via Bluetooth , IrDA or network.
  • News of the day: The current tasks, stock prices, e-mails, birthdays, weather reports and appointments are displayed in an overview.
  • Plugins: enable, for example, handwriting recognition, keyboard input, ...

OPIE supports many devices and offers binary compatibility with Zaurus applications. For access to the operating system itself, there is a Linux shell and extended security functions through Linux Security Services.

Originally, OPIE was based on Qtopia from Trolltech , which has been further developed in some areas .
