iPAQ
iPAQ is a line of PDAs originally manufactured by Compaq . Since the takeover of Compaq by Hewlett-Packard , they are sold under the HP label.
As operating system is Pocket PC or Windows Mobile by Microsoft for use that is similar to the familiar Windows operating systems, from desktop PCs to use. It is operated via a touchscreen , applications that are often required are placed on separate hardware buttons (e.g. calendar, addresses, etc.). Text is entered using an on-screen keyboard on the touchscreen or using handwriting recognition. Some newer models also have a numeric or alpha-numeric keypad.
history
Before the takeover of Compaq, HP had its own PDAs under the model name Jornada on offer. However, after the acquisition, these models were replaced by Compaq's iPAQs. Due to their great expandability in a professional environment, these simply offered more options.
In 2004, HP came under increasing criticism in the course of its iPAQ product line, as no updates to current operating system generations were offered. As an argument, HP cited, among other things, that an adaptation of the software to the existing devices (i.e. devices that had been on the market for a year or more, i.e. all devices produced to date) was not desired by a majority of users and was questioned that users are willing to pay the high price given the low demand. Before that, not much after the release of the Windows Mobile 2003-SE operating system, Toshiba had already released upgrades for the e400 and primarily e800 products, which at the time benefited from the main innovation, the support for VGA displays.
In 2005, HP announced an upgrade to the current version 5.0 of the Windows Mobile operating system for the hx2100, hx2400, hx2700 and hx4700 product series. After a delay in the upgrade for the iPAQ hx4700, in September 2006 all upgrades were available for around 50 €.
After HP has now taken over Palm and its WebOS and Microsoft discontinued Windows Mobile in favor of Windows Phone 7 , no further iPAQ models based on Windows Mobile are to be expected.
technology
Before the takeover of Compaq, the iPAQs were delivered with an extended interface. It made it possible to expand the PDA with so-called sleeves (also called jackets). These are brackets into which the PDA can be inserted and which provide various functions. There were sleeves with compact flash slots and with PCMCIA slots (also dual PCMCIA slots) and versions of both sleeves with and without an integrated battery. Later versions with Bluetooth, VGA connection, GPS and other extensions were also developed.
Starting with the H3800 generation, the docking port has been revised and remained the same until around 2007. This made it possible to use old hardware on new devices. However, the positioning on the PDA occasionally causes problems, so that the hardware would work electrically, but physically does not fit and requires some adjustment work. In addition, some series do not have a serial connection . HP has rotated the connector on these devices by 180 degrees.
As of 2010, all models use a mini-USB port, only the iPAQ 200 series has a second, extended port that can a. contains a USB host interface. At least for the PDAs of the iPAQ series there are currently no more docking stations from HP.
Windows CE is used as the operating system for the iPAQs or Windows Mobile from the hx2xxx models. Windows Mobile 5.0 has been preinstalled since the hx2190 / hx2490 and hx2790 models, which normally (as here, too) uses flash memory instead of RAM so that the data stored on the device is no longer lost when the battery is empty.
Alternative operating systems
Although the Windows Mobile operating system is installed in the original state, there are also Linux ports such as Ångström or Familiar Linux, the GPE Palmtop Environment , Qtopia or OPIE as a graphical interface. It was also NetBSD and Plan 9 ported to the iPAQ.
use
The iPAQ models were intended for professional use, especially in the early days. This was underlined by the large expansion options, especially through the PCMCIA sleeve. This made it possible to use conventional laptop technology directly in a PDA. Only the drivers had to be adjusted. Some manufacturers still offer devices to connect iPAQ devices directly to GPS, measuring devices, tactical (military) radios, WLAN and modems, for example , or to upgrade them with hard drives, digital cameras, RFID readers / writers. Many of these extensions are now also available for other PDAs. The iPAQ was not the first PDA to offer this range of expansion options, but it was the device that was first so popular that it was attractive to manufacturers. There are also manufacturers who pack the iPAQ internals in industrial-grade housings and market them under their own product names. As a result, these devices are IP54- compatible or even suitable for potentially explosive applications.
Movie and TV
Devices from the H5500 and H5400 series can be found again and again in a wide variety of films or television series. For example in CSI: NY or CSI: Miami , or a Compaq iPAQ 3800/3900 series in Nip / Tuck - beauty has its price .
Models
The following list is sorted by date of sale. The models up to and including the iPAQ 3900 are still Compaq-labeled, but have already been sold by HP. The iPAQ h5450 was the first series device with the HP logo.

A digital camera with a resolution of 1.2 megapixels is certainly not a substitute for a "real" digital camera, but it allows significantly better results than z. B. a simple cell phone camera. To use the digital camera, the device is held wide-sided, which turns the display into a wide-screen viewfinder. Furthermore, multimedia programs from the company "Nevo" are included. a. connect to a network-connected host and stream music to the device from there.
