HP Jornada

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jornada was a range of PDA and handheld PC models manufactured by Hewlett-Packard that was discontinued in 2003. After the acquisition of Compaq , HP no longer produced its own PDAs, but about a year after the takeover of Compaq, its IPAQ models were also provided with the HP logo.

The operating system of the Jornada PDAs was Windows CE or Pocket PC 2002 ; HP no longer offered updates for further development of the operating system ( Windows Mobile ).

Jornada 520

The Jornada 520 series was HP's attempt to produce a cheap Pocket PC, and was based on the 540 series. Technical data included 16 MB RAM , a Type II CompactFlash drive, a 256 color screen and a 133 MHz SH3 CPU. A variant of Windows CE 3.0 under the name "Pocket PC 2000" was used as the operating system . An optional "flip cover" was available for the 520 as for the 540 models, but only a serial cable (e.g. for synchronization) could be used for the data connection. The Jornada 520 series corresponded to the same format as the 540, but was painted silver.

Jornada 540

The Jornada 540 was a Pocket PC with a touchscreen and 32 MB RAM . Equipped with a SHx SH3 processor and a version of Windows CE modified by HP, it was characterized by a hinged cover as a screen protector, in which the input pen could be fixed when not in use. Quick access buttons and a scroll wheel on the side round off the special equipment details. The device was connected to the PC via a serial connection on the supplied cradle, which also charged the Pocket PC. The Jornada 540 was equipped with a CF slot.

Jornada 565/568

The last model was the HP Jornada 565/568 with a 206 MHz StrongARM processor. It was produced until around 2003. It is a device with a colored, illuminated touchscreen (240 × 320 pixels). The 565 has 32 MB of RAM , the 568 64 MB. The series had a built-in microphone, IrDA interface and a slot for CompactFlash cards of type 1, which is why the devices do not support IBM Microdrives .

The power supply came from an easily exchangeable lithium-ion battery on the back of the device, which guaranteed working times of over 10 hours. A removable battery with twice the capacity was offered as an accessory. The base station had a recess for this purpose, which was filled with a cover in the normal battery.

Handheld PC models

HP Jornada 690

Compared to normal PDAs, handheld PCs have the advantage of having their own keyboard. The models in the Jornada series are high-quality, notebook- like keyboard. This enables faster and more convenient text input and is therefore also ideal for writing longer texts. In addition, electronic texts can be saved on a Compact Flash card and searched using the keyboard, just like on a desktop PC . The handheld PCs from HP were based on a Windows CE operating system specially adapted for this device class .

Jornada 820

The Jornada 820 was the first handheld PC in the Jornada series. It had an Intel StrongARM CPU with 190 MHz, 16 MB RAM, 16 MB ROM, a compact flash slot, a PC card slot, a 56 K modem and a 640 × 480 pixel 8-bit -Touchscreen. There was also a model variant without a modem, this was called the Jornada 820e.

Jornada 680

The Jornada 680 was launched in 1998. The PDA has a 133 MHz Hitachi SH3 processor with 16 MB RAM and 16 MB ROM. It has a compact flash slot, a PC card slot, a 56 K modem, an internal loudspeaker, a built-in microphone for recording notes via voice and an infrared interface. In addition, a 640 × 240 16-bit touchscreen and a serial interface . The Jornada 680 is based on Windows CE 2.11, Handheld PC Pro 3.0. Compared to the competition, this model and its successors stood out with a keyboard that was good in terms of space and resembled a miniature notebook keyboard. The Jornada 680 had - apparently for reasons of space - the peculiarity that when a PC card was inserted, the compact flash slot was everted downwards by a spring mechanism, so that the underside of the device was no longer flat. The docking station had a corresponding recess at this point to accommodate the unfolded Compact Flash slot. Subsequent models were able to accommodate both types of cards without resorting to this vulnerable mechanism.

Variants were the Jornada 690, which was equipped with twice as much RAM compared to the Jornada 680 (32 MB instead of 16 MB) and the Jornada 680e and 690e, neither of which had an integrated modem.

Jornada 720

The Jornada 720 was launched in 2000. It is equipped with an Intel StrongARM CPU with 206 MHz and 32 MB RAM, has slots for compact flash, PC card and smart cards , a 56 K modem and a 640 × 240 16-bit touchscreen. In addition to the internal loudspeaker, there is also a headphone output for listening to music . The operating system is based on Windows CE 3.0, Handheld PC 2000.

In addition to the Jornada 720, there was also the slimmed-down Jornada 710, which was delivered without an internal modem and without a docking station . The last handheld PC produced by HP was the Jornada 728, which compared to the Jornada 720 has a better display , longer battery life and a RAM doubled to 64 MB.
