Smart display

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Smart Displays are called PC monitors which are operated with battery and radio link, so that they in a radius of about 30 m to the PC portable shown. They resemble tablet PCs in their appearance . In the years 2002 to 2004 they were propagated as a further development of the PC monitor, but became obsolete due to tablet PCs, web pads or laptops .

functionality

Smart display and PC connect via a wireless connection ( WLAN 802.11 ). Both devices continuously communicate with each other via Remote Desktop Protocol ; the user sees exactly what he would see on a conventional PC screen (all programs, data and settings). This corresponds to the principle of a terminal client . A stripped-down version of Windows runs on the Smart Display itself, which is called "Windows CE for Smart Display" . The hardware of such smart displays is also rudimentary - mostly around 400 MHz and 64 MB RAM - which is completely sufficient for the purpose. With these technical data, it cannot offer a replacement for a laptop. Once the connection between home PC and smart display has been established, the user can move around freely; the WLAN connection allows a distance of around 30 meters, which is sufficient for most apartments. The user makes inputs by using a stylus on the touchscreen .

Others

Manufacturers of smart displays included Philips , Viewsonic , Fujitsu , and NEC . Viewsonic in particular had made a name for itself among the producers of smart displays. In 2004, all of them were criticized for not being fully developed: the display often appeared too blurry, the displays with an average weight of 2.7 kg were too heavy, and in terms of price they were hardly below a significantly better equipped laptop. The scarce customer interest led Microsoft to withdraw from the smart display business in mid-2004.

By the proliferation of smart phones , tablet PCs (such as the iPad from Apple ) and internet-enabled flat-screen televisions that (and more) allows is what the Smart Displays should enable the user.
