Margaret Cushing "Meg" Whitman (born August 4, 1956 in Cold Spring Harbor , New York ) is an American manager and billionaire. From September 22, 2011, she was CEO and President of Hewlett-Packard and, following its demerger, from November 1, 2015 to January 31, 2018, CEO and President of Hewlett Packard Enterprise . From 1998 to 2008 she was CEO and a member of the Board of Directors at eBay . She ran for California governorate in 2010 . In 2014, she was named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential Leaders in the World.

Life

education

Whitman began studying medicine at Princeton University in 1974 , but soon switched to majoring in economics . After completing her Bachelor's degree in 1977, she earned a Master of Business Administration from Harvard University in 1979 . Whitman is married to a neurosurgeon and has two children.

In business

Whitman started at Procter & Gamble in 1979 , where she worked in brand management until 1981. From 1981 to 1989 she worked for the management consultancy Bain & Company . She then moved to Walt Disney as senior vice president in marketing. In 1992 she moved to the shoe manufacturer Stride Ride Shoes in Lexington. From 1995 to 1997 she was the managing director of the flower delivery company Florist's Transworld Delivery .

Until she was poached to eBay by recruiters in 1998 , she was General Manager at toy manufacturer Hasbro . When Whitman became CEO of eBay in March 1998, the company founded in 1995 by Pierre Omidyar under the name Auctionweb had 30 employees. In September 1998, she listed eBay on the stock exchange. As a shareholder, she also benefited from the initially rapidly rising prices and was considered the first billionaire from the Internet age. In March 2008, she handed over the position of CEO at eBay to her successor, John Donahoe . At the end of 2008 she resigned from the supervisory boards of eBay, Procter & Gamble and Dreamworks .

On September 22, 2011, she replaced Léo Apotheker as CEO and President of Hewlett-Packard . Whitman stepped down as CEO on February 1, 2018, handing over to Antonio Neri.

She was briefly traded as the successor to Travis Kalanick in the role of CEO at Uber , but has been named CEO of NewTV , a new mobile content company supported by Jeffrey Katzenberg . She will take on her new role on March 1st.

In politics

Whitman has been a member of the Republican Party since 2007 and supported first Mitt Romney in the Republican primaries for the 2008 presidential election , then the Republican presidential candidate John McCain . On February 9, 2009, she founded a working group for her candidacy for gubernatorial election in the state of California in November 2010, in which incumbent Arnold Schwarzenegger was no longer allowed to run. On September 22, 2009, she announced her official candidacy and finally won the Republican primary on June 8, 2010 with 64.2% of the votes cast. At the same time, Carly Fiorina , CEO of Hewlett-Packard from 1999 to 2005 , another former manager, was elected Republican challenger to Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer .

In the gubernatorial election on November 2, 2010 , Jerry Brown , who served as California governor from 1975 to 1983 and was Attorney General of the state at the time of the election , stood against Whitman for the Democrats . Whitman invested more money from her personal fortune in the election campaign than any US candidate before. Ultimately, however, she lost to Brown. It received 40.9 percent of the vote, while 53.8 percent of California voters supported Brown.

Positions

Whitman and other members of the Republican Party wrote a letter to the Supreme Court in which the signatories advocate the marriage of homosexual couples.
