Jolla Oy , also known as Jolla Mobile and internationally as Jolla Limited (Ltd.) (German equivalent: Jolle ), is a Finnish company that develops and sells smartphones based on the "Sailfish OS" operating system. It continues the work that Nokia started with the only MeeGo phone to date, the Nokia N9 . After Nokia decided to switch entirely to Microsoft Windows Phone , MeeGo development was stopped there. The Jolla team consists of managers and core staff from the old Nokia N9 development team, while additional developers from the Linux area were recruited. The company's own successor to the MeeGo operating system, "Sailfish OS", was presented at the end of 2012, and the first smartphone at the end of May 2013.

history

Jolla was founded as a new company by former Nokia employees to continue work on MeeGo . MeeGo, in turn, was a combination of Nokia's Maemo operating system and Intel's Moblin . After Nokia decided not to pursue MeeGo any further and to concentrate on Microsoft Windows Phone , Intel looked for a new partner in the wireless industry. There was Samsung and both companies are now pursuing their new joint project called Tizen , with the big difference that Tizen originally the Qt library should not support (for more information see Tizen compatibility ). Since then, the MeeGo approach has been practically history, even if both MeeGo and Tizen are a Linux Foundation project . Only the open source project Mer (operating system), financed by donations, continued the MeeGo tradition, but dispensed with a user interface and hardware driver layers and thus only provides the core libraries of an operating system based on Linux for use in the mobile sector. At around the same time, many Nokia employees were laid off or their contracts were no longer renewed. Nokia's Bridge program gave the employees affected the opportunity to become self-employed and set up their own companies. This also applied to Jussi Hurmola and Marc Dillon, who founded Jolla Mobile in 2011.

Nokia and Jolla are in contact through the Bridge program and Nokia is aware of Jolla's plans. Jolla's CEO didn't expect any patent problems with Nokia. However, Nokia did not give Jolla any patents. As a result, Jolla does not hold any rights to the Nokia N9 either, which is why Jolla will not provide any support. This is also the reason why Jolla can use a different user interface for the Sailfish OS interface and not the SWIPE technology patented by Nokia.

The first reactions of the trade press to the sales launch certify a ... successful entry into the smartphone market ... and ... that not much was found that needs to be improved . But there was also criticism that Sailfish OS does not react quickly enough and that the operation of the smartphone takes a lot of getting used to.

In November 2015, it was revealed that Jolla was fighting for economic survival after a major investor dropped out. Much of the workforce was temporarily laid off. Another financing round in mid-December ensured the continued existence of the company.

software

Jolla's devices use the Sailfish operating system , which was introduced on November 21, 2012. The RPM package manager is used. Data can be transferred directly via a USB cable, eliminating the need for a detour via the cloud , Bluetooth or other proprietary solutions.

Sailfish OS is based on work from the Mer project . The Mer development environment supports different CPU architectures, currently these are ARMv6l, ARMv7l, ARMv7hl, MIPSel and x86. However, the Mer-Core distribution is delivered without a Linux kernel. It only contains system libraries above the kernel layer and below the user interface; H. from the middle operating system level. Consequently, in contrast to Meego, Mer no longer has its own surface. The old Meego user interface will be continued under the company's own Nemo project. In order to get a complete Sailfish OS Linux distribution, a device-specific Linux kernel, a version of the Mer-Core and Jolla's user interface must be combined. The development of all three components runs independently of one another. Software development cycles are therefore independent of the hardware development cycles. With this decoupling, the developers expect faster support for new hardware components as well as hardware-independent development of the user interface and thus more flexibility. Jolla develops its own user interface and calls it in combination with Mer Sailfish OS . Applications can be written in HTML5 and Qt or QML .

Version 2.0 was presented as a beta version at MWC 2015 . Version 3 was presented simultaneously in Helsinki and Berlin.

In October 2017 it was announced that the Bolivian IT group Grupo Jala will take over localization for Latin America as a partner of Jolla. To promote the regional developer and user community, two smartphones with Sailfish OS were also presented under the ACCIONE brand.

Graphics display system

Unlike many traditional Linux distributions Jolla sets at Sailfish OS on Wayland instead of X11 . In order to be able to use the Android GPU drivers widely used in smartphones, Jolla's developer Carsten Munk Wayland adapted accordingly. Details of its implementation can be found in two of his blog entries.

Development environment

There are currently four development environments for Linux (32 and 64 bit) as well as Windows and macOS that can be used to create native apps for Sailfish OS. The development environment (SDK) uses the Qt library with a VirtualBox to develop and support different systems such as Android , Linux, iOS or Windows . This as well as the open nature of the SDK allow the SDK to be adapted or expanded to special environments, companies, and developer groups. At the beginning of August 2013, Jolla published an updated version on its website SailfishOS.org, which includes support for Qt5, QtQuick and Wayland; further updates are automatic.

application areas

Sailfish OS is designed with the aforementioned flexible software architecture with the three software layers for a wide variety of end devices. Mobile devices (smartphones and tablets), computers, notebooks, navigation devices, smart TVs, infotainment systems , yachts and boats and household appliances were given as examples - this already corresponded to the situation under MeeGo .

Compatible Android phones

In February 2014 Jolla announced that it would also offer Sailfish OS for common Android devices within the first half of 2014. First there will be a simulation of the user interface ("user interface simulation") that can be installed via app stores, later the complete operating system will follow. At the Mobile World Congress 2014 (MWC14) Jolla showed Sailfish OS on the following devices:

Jolla made the first pre-production image of Sailfish OS available for the Nexus 4 on March 30, 2014. Images for the S3 LTE are to follow. In addition, a developer tool should enable porting to all mobile devices with CyanogenMod -10.1 support.

As of February 2016, porting to the Fairphone 2 was 90 percent complete (see also the list of mobile phones on which Sailfish OS is running).

An official SailfishOS distribution ("Sailfish X") for the Sony Xperia X (F5121 / F5122) has been available for sale since autumn 2017 . Since November 2018, with the release of version 3 of Sailfish OS, the Sony Xperia XA2 has also been supported, as well as the Sony Xperia 10 from November 2019.

Licensing

Jolla makes its operating system available for licensing to every interested smartphone manufacturer. Details of the license are not yet known, but the complete Sailfish OS should be available under an open source license.

Applications

Jolla offers its own app store for Sailfish OS called "Jolla Harbor", in which developers can upload not only Qt-based programs written especially for Sailfish OS, but also Android applications. In addition, the virtual marketplaces from Yandex , Aptoide and Amazon Appstore offer an additional range of Android programs. In addition, it is possible to install Android applications directly from Google Play by making slight modifications to the software .

Common API with other Linux mobile systems

Since, as described above, there are no major technical differences between Ubuntu's mobile system and Jolla, according to a report on Techweekeurope, both parties have started discussions about a uniform programming interface together with the Plasma Workspaces of the KDE project, which also use Qt. This would make it possible to support multiple systems with just one app, whereby the design of the graphic output would differ depending on the system.

Functional, removable back that can be connected to the main processor via I²C and NFC .

Marc Dillon shows the first Jolla smartphone on the so-called “Jolla love day” in the KlausK Hotel, Helsinki.

On May 20, 2013 Jolla presented its first smartphone under the name "Jolla". It has a dual-core processor , 16 gigabytes of internal memory, supports 3G and LTE networks , a 4.5-inch screen and a user-replaceable battery.

The unique selling point is the removable back of the case with the name “The other half”. In contrast to previous cell phones, the back of Jolla's device has an electrical connection to the main device so that its functionality can be expanded. According to Jollas CEO, the extensions would only be limited "by the imagination", initially there was only a relatively simple logic that adapted the background menu colors of the operating system to the color of the back part currently in use. At the "Akademy 2013" trade fair, further details of the function were given. For example, you could use a party half and a work back half that automatically turns social media services on or off or blocks calls from the employer. A keyboard was also given as an example. The rear half has its own data and power connection (the former via an I2C bus ), i. H. not only is NFC used. The price of the device was 399 euros when it was launched and was reduced to 349 euros in June 2014. Jolla plans to have sales in the order of one million devices. In Finland, the month of December, telecommunications provider DNA Oy put the device in 5th place among smartphones sold and 1st in the price range over 300 euros.

A successor device, the Jolla C with improved hardware and dual SIM, was available to developers in limited numbers. This device is similar to the Intex Aquafish, which is only offered in India.

The Jolla Tablet was only shipped in small numbers because Jolla ran into financial difficulties. As an alternative, interested parties can purchase a similar model from Youyota.

The Accione phone from Jala from Bolivia is delivered with SailfishOS in addition to Android.

Sailfish X is an official release for the Sony Xperia X and Sony Xperia XA2 .

Device design

The design comes from Infinity, a Finnish design company that has been working on Jolla's first mobile phone since September / October 2012. So far, Infinity was best known for the design of Nokia's headsets, chargers and some Huawei smartphones, but has also worked for BMW.

Planned models

On November 19, 2014, Jolla started a crowdfunding campaign for a tablet computer. The financing target was reached three times after just 36 hours.

The manufacture and delivery of the pre-ordered tablets was delayed several times for various reasons, and Jolla published a delivery schedule for the tablets on its own blog. In the fourth quarter of 2015, the devices ordered were to be sent to buyers in three delivery cycles. A first batch of 121 tablets actually reached customers in October 2015. However, when Jolla got into financial difficulties at the end of the year, the production of the tablets and the continued existence of the company were uncertain. Jolla was able to prevent the worst, but the plan to deliver a tablet to all buyers could no longer be kept. At the end of January 2016, it was a fact that Jolla could only send an additional 540 tablets and would start delivering immediately. The second batch of 77 Jolla tablets was shipped in February 2016. A total of 198 tablets have found their owners to date. A total of 661 buyers should come to what is probably the last in-house tablet.

After the problems with the hardware (tablet) released by Jolla, the company is now concentrating on the software development of Sailfish OS and using devices from other manufacturers, e.g. B. the Sony Xperia X & XA2 to distribute Sailfish OS through license sales.

Milestones

Jolla was registered as a Finnish Public Company (Oy) on March 29, 2011 and finally registered on October 14, 2011.

The sale of the Jolla cell phone in Helsinki began on November 27, 2013, initially limited to 450 units.

As the trade press reported last year, from mid-December 2013 the Jolla mobile phone could be ordered across Europe from the manufacturer's own web shop. Delivery times of three to four weeks are mentioned. A year later (2014) the delivery times to Germany are just under a week.

In November 2015, Jolla lowered the price of the mobile phone to € 199 (now on sale for € 169).

Sailfish X was released in October 2017. This version can be installed on any Sony Xperia X after purchasing the license .

Sailfish 3 will be released in November 2018 and will expand the range of functions by e.g. B. Mobile device management . At the same time, the Sony Xperia XA2 is also supported.

In March 2019 it was announced that Jolla's SailfishOS project will merge with the Mer project.
