Moblin was an open source project that aimed to develop a Linux distribution specially adapted to Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) and other device classes such as netbooks and nettops . Intel launched the website in July 2007 and significantly expanded the site in April 2008 with the publication of the Intel Atom processor family at the Intel Developer Forum in Shanghai. The Intel Atom processor family is aimed at MIDs, nettops and other market segments where low power consumption and low cost are critical. The Moblin.org website has a software development kit , the source code for all major components of the Moblin platform, as well as documentation and sample code .

The Moblin project was discontinued and transferred to MeeGo .

Main components

  • Moblin Image Creator (MIC): enables developers to create their own Linux file system for a device. With MIC, a platform developer can decide which Moblin components he would like to use on his device, develop the desired target system, save the necessary files on a USB stick and load them onto the target.
  • Kernel: Platform-specific patches on the Linux kernel and many other device drivers.
  • UI Framework: Screen interface and its underlying GTK -based framework that uses the Hildon application framework .
  • Power Management Policy: extends and improves existing "Linux Power Management" options.
  • Browser: the Moblin browser is a full-fledged web browser, based on Mozilla , with a finger-controlled user interface and "MID-UI" integration. The Moblin browser supports plugins such as Adobe Flash .
  • Multimedia: audio and video playback and image viewer including the Helix or GStreamer multimedia frameworks.
  • Linux Connection Manager: Internet connections that can be expanded by plugins to support various networks, including wireless ones.

status

Moblin v2.1 was released on November 5th, 2009. Moblin gained some attention among mini notebook users with a demonstrated boot time of five seconds on an Asus EeePC 901 with SSD . Since the hardware basis of many mini notebooks is identical, Moblin can be installed on many devices. With a conventional hard drive, the system with GUI is fully operational within 13 seconds. On February 15, 2010, Nokia and Intel announced a collaboration. Moblin has merged with the mobile phone Linux Maemo and is now being further developed as MeeGo .

Participants and partners

The Moblin project was sponsored by Intel. Other providers are working on Linux distributions that are compatible with Moblin:

Since the publication of the first Moblin-based MIDs in summer 2008, the focus of the project has shifted beyond the development of the core system to support the porting and development of new applications for Moblin. Intel sponsored a number of development competitions, particularly with regard to developers in India , to help jump-start the Moblin application system.
