Asus Eee PC
The Eee PC [ iː piː siː ] was a series of netbooks from the computer manufacturer Asus . The acronym “Eee” stands for the slogan “ E asy · E xcellent · E xciting ” (simple, excellent, exciting) or “ E asy to learn, E asy to work, E asy to play ”.
history
The devices in the Eee PC series were primarily intended for the mass market in emerging countries, whereas in industrialized nations they appeared as lifestyle products with a significant delay.
With the appearance of the first iPad in 2010 and the subsequent development of tablets , the development of the Eee PC was discontinued. In the meantime, netbooks have become a rarity.
The first device was the Eee PC 700 , a subnotebook that was offered at a very low price for this category. From Intel , the designation was for this device class in February 2008 Netbook introduced. The device has been on sale in Taiwan since October 16, 2007 , followed by the USA in early November and the UK in mid-November. In Germany and Austria, sales began on January 24, 2008, but initially only in one version ( Eee PC 701 4G ) and in two different colors (black and pearl white).
Delivery bottlenecks occurred in all countries as demand exceeded supply, the scope of which Asus did not disclose. The huge demand resulted in a number of similar devices from competitors.
The successor model, the Eee PC 900 , came onto the market in Germany on June 26, 2008, and was later followed on August 18, 2008 by the Eee PC 901 , which has an Intel Atom processor as its CPU . On September 4, 2008, the Eee PC 1000H appeared , which has a 10-inch display, a 160 GB hard drive, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, Bluetooth and an n-WLAN interface. When launched, the successor products cost (in some cases considerably) more than the Eee PC 701 4G when it was launched (299 euros).
In June 2009 Asus showed a variant with a Snapdragon processor - as the first PC-like device based on ARM (according to Acorn ); Google's Android was running on it as the operating system. However, the device was only presented as a prototype and did not go on sale.
70x series
The first model of the Eee PC has a display with a screen size of 7 inches and a resolution of 800 × 480 pixels . The processor in the 701 series is an underclocked Celeron Mobile processor (ULV353), which is operated at 630 instead of 900 MHz. With the Eee PC 700 2G surf , the simplest model not available in Europe, the processor only has 570 MHz. An Intel 915GML is used as the graphics chip in all models, which in addition to the internal display has a VGA connection via which an external monitor or projector with a resolution of up to 1600 × 1200 pixels can be operated. The models have between 256 (700) and 1024 MB RAM , depending on the equipment variant .
Stereo speakers are available for the sound, which are controlled by a high-definition audio chipset. There is also a microphone and audio input and output. There is no optical drive (CD / DVD). Instead of a hard drive, a solid state drive with - depending on the equipment variant - 2 to 8 GB of storage capacity is installed. All models have a 10/100 Mbit LAN port, 11/54 Mbit WiFi (Atheros chipset), three USB 2.0 ports, a card reader for MMC / SD / SDHC - and a PCI Express - Mini card slot.
There are a total of four equipment variants of the Eee PC abroad and in the colors pink, green, blue as well as black and white. The main distinguishing features are the capacity of the main memory, the size of the solid state disk and the capacity of the battery. In addition, some variants have a built-in webcam . In Germany, availability is still limited to the 4G model with a webcam in black and white.
The device has a size of 225 mm × 165 mm with a height of 21 mm to 35 mm and weighs 920 g with battery (model 4G ). This makes the Eee PC much smaller and lighter than notebooks that are comparable in price.

software
The Eee PC 700/701 is delivered in the Easy Mode of the preinstalled Linux derivative Xandros . In this mode, the application programs are divided into several categories (Internet, work, learning, games, settings, favorites) with particularly large and colorful symbols. The Easy Mode is based on the window manager iceWM , which ensures a Microsoft Windows XP- like appearance of the windows and otherwise mainly contributes a status bar on the lower screen. The KDE desktop and the text mode file manager Midnight Commander are also preinstalled .
Any other operating system can be installed, but limited by the hardware. For example, there is a specially adapted version of the Linux distributions Xubuntu ; instructions for many other systems can be found on the Internet. Most of them support the Asus EeePC " out of the box ", without having to make any special adjustments. Drivers are available for Microsoft Windows XP , but operation in the standard screen resolution is made more difficult because Windows XP dialog boxes may not be fully displayed. Although the installation of Microsoft Windows Vista is basically possible on models with at least 8 GB of permanent storage, the system can only be used to a limited extent due to the performance that is hardly higher than Microsoft's for these system requirements.
90x series
After rumors about models with a larger display circulated again and again and Asus also exhibited such models at trade fairs, a model series with a significantly larger display of 8.9 ″ and a resolution of 1024 × was launched at CeBIT 2008 under the name Eee PC 900 600 pixels presented. The model has a 12 GB hard drive with a Windows license and a 20 GB hard drive with Linux. Asus invests the money saved with the Windows license in a larger capacity. Both versions have 4 GB built-in in the form of an SSD , which can only be replaced by opening the housing. The operating system is then saved. The Windows version also has 8 GB flash memory and the Linux version 16 GB flash memory via a mini-PCIe slot. Additional features include a webcam integrated above the display, which now has a resolution of 1.3 instead of 0.3 megapixels. As with the Eee PC 701, there is also an SDHC memory card slot, three USB ports and a D-Sub VGA output. The headphone output and microphone input are also integrated as a 3.5 mm jack socket as usual. On the other hand, the new model in Germany costs € 100 more from the June 26, 2008 release date, or € 399. The speakers are now attached to the underside of the housing. The 900 series continues to use the Intel Celeron with 900 MHz as the processor.
The newer model Eee PC 900 with 8.9 "display is only available in Germany in the 12 GB version with Windows XP Home, in Switzerland only as a 20 GB model with Linux. According to press reports, this is also available in Germany Linux model should be introduced, Asus brought the 900A model onto the German market with a delay , an Eee PC 900 equipped with an Atom processor, but with only 8 GB of flash memory at 299 €.
The Eee PC 900A is supplied with a Linux distribution, drivers for Windows XP are included.
The Eee PC 901 is now also available with an Intel Atom processor instead of the Celeron M , a battery with larger capacity and an integrated Bluetooth module. The battery life has been extended significantly through the more efficient processor and the increased battery capacity. The Eee PC 901 appeared in Germany on August 18, 2008, but like the Eee PC 900 before it, only in the Windows version with 12 GB of memory.
In Germany, the Eee PC 900HD model has also been available since November 7, 2008 , an Eee PC 900 that uses a 160 GB hard disk instead of the SSD.
The Eee PC 901Go has a built-in UMTS modem with HSPA (HSDPA + HSUPA) , 16 GB SSD and is optionally available in white or black, with Windows XP Home or Linux.
In November 2008, the Eee PC 904HD came on the German market, which has a large keyboard like the Eee PC 1000 (H) . Like all models of the 90x series, it is equipped with an 8.9 "display with a frame around the screen. The Eee PC 904HD has a 900 MHz Celeron M processor.

1000 series
At Computex 2008, Asus showed two Eee PCs with 10.1-inch displays. The resulting enlargement of the housing was used to enlarge the keyboard, making the 1000 series more suitable for typing with ten fingers than the 90x and 70x series. The 1000 series will be equipped with Draft-N WiFi, Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel webcam and Intel's Atom platform . The Eee PC 1000 is equipped with a 40 GB SSD , the Eee PC 1000H with a 2.5-inch hard drive with up to 160 GB. The Eee PC 1000H was the first model in the series to be available in Germany on September 4, 2008.
In March 2009 the Eee PC 1008HA was released in the "Seashell" design. The housing is optionally available in black or white high-gloss plastic and an Intel Atom N280 is used as the CPU. In October 2009, the Eee PC 1008P / 1008PGO model was released without notice. It is also equipped with a 10.1-inch display with a resolution of 1024 × 600 pixels, but has an Intel Atom N450 CPU. The Eee PC 1008PGO also contains an integrated UMTS modem.
In June 2008 the Stiftung Warentest tested various notebooks; The Asus Eee PC 1000H came off best in the Netbook category with a grade of 2.6. Devices from HP , Dell , MSI , Acer and One were also tested.

The new S series was presented in the fourth quarter of 2008. Asus wanted to combine the "old" features of the series with a "new" look. With the S101, Asus presented its most expensive netbook in the EeePC series to date. While other manufacturers were offering their mini laptops increasingly cheaper, Asus was aiming for a price of just under 700 US dollars for the S101. When folded, the S101 is only half as thick as its affordable brothers and weighs only 1 kilogram. Later the S101 came on the market in an S101H version, which differed from the other model only in the hard disk.
equipment
Asus has adapted the DVB-T tuner MyCinema U3000 Mini and additional devices (e.g. better speakers) to the design and hardware of the Eee PC .
