Out of the box

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An out-of-the-box function , often also abbreviated to OOTB function , describes a property or function of a software or hardware component in computer science that is immediately available after installation without further adaptation of the component.

An out-of-the-box solution describes a solution that already contains all the resources required to perform a specific task and provides it immediately after installation without any adjustments.

Demarcation

In contrast, there are so-called customer-specific (or customized) solutions or functions that require the solution to be adapted to the requirements of individual customers in order to fulfill a specific task.

Examples

The word processing software LibreOffice Writer is an “out-of-the-box” solution for word processing that can be used for writing texts immediately after installation without any further adjustments or configurations. The business software SAP ERP, on the other hand, requires adjustments to the respective requirements of the customer after installation and can only then meaningfully fulfill its task once the adjustments have been made - it would therefore be called a customer-specific solution.
