HERE or Here.com (formerly Smart2Go , Map24 , Navteq , Ovi Maps and Nokia Maps ) is an online - spatial service and a navigation program , originally from Nokia for Nokia smartphones was developed. Special features of the navigation solution on mobile phones were the independence of an internet connection due to the storage of the spatial data material on the mobile device and the fact that it was free of charge for personal, non-commercial purposes.

The company of the same name develops and markets the spatial data service. It has its headquarters for the EMEA economic region in Veldhoven .

history

2007 Nokia took over 8 billion US dollars Navteq. In addition to Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive , Bing and Yahoo also built on the data from Navteq . At times, smartphones with street data and route guidance were a unique selling point of the former market leader Nokia, but that faded with Google Maps on Android . In November 2012, Nokia announced that it would rename its spatial data services Here and also offer them for Apple iOS as well as Android and Firefox OS . In 2014, Nokia gave up its device division and sold it to Microsoft .

In April 2015, Nokia announced that Here was for sale. On August 3, 2015, it was announced that Here will be taken over by the three German automobile manufacturers Audi , BMW and Daimler , each of which are said to own a third of Here. Nokia named 2.8 billion euros as the purchase price. After all the relevant antitrust authorities had given their approval, Here has belonged to the three automobile manufacturers since December 4, 2015.

In March 2016, the service for the Windows 10 or Windows 10 Mobile operating system was discontinued.

The navigation app has been called HERE WeGo since August 2016 .

In 2017, a group of Asian investors acquired 10% of the shares in Here, the shares of the previous owners Audi, BMW and Daimler were reduced in equal parts. The new investors are Navinfo and Tencent from China and GIC from Singapore. Even Intel 2017 took a 15% share in the company. In January 2018, the automotive suppliers Bosch and Continental each took over 5% of the shares.

Maps and integration into social networks

Satellite images are not included in the offline map material, but can be reloaded via a mobile internet connection. For India, however, satellite images are not available even in the gross view. Favorites can be synchronized between a PC browser and a mobile phone using a Nokia account; routes cannot be synchronized.

With the "Check In" function you can log into social networks via Nokia Maps and receive information about your current location or share it with others. It supports Facebook , Qype , Twitter , Foursquare , Friendster , LiveJournal , Hyves , StudiVZ and RenRen .

Your own position can also be sent to friends via SMS , e-mail or WhatsApp .

Map coverage and distribution

The map material comes from the Nokia subsidiary Navteq and covers 196 countries (as of August 2013). Local public transport routes and stops are displayed from around 700 cities in 50 countries.

With the so-called Map Creator , users can not only report map errors, but also correct them themselves. New streets, points of interest or house numbers can also be added or deleted. A user account is required to use Map Creator . The changes are checked by Here employees and appear some time later in the online route planner, in the app and, depending on the update speed, on the end devices of the user.

According to their own statements, 1 billion mobile devices, such as smartphones or tablet PCs, as well as other navigation systems use geodata from Here or Navteq. These include navigation solutions from Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Citroën, Honda, Jaguar, Mini, Porsche, Renault, Skoda, Toyota and devices from Garmin, among others .
