Hyves
Hyves was a social network operated by Hyves BV. The company in Amsterdam was founded by the Dutchmen Raymond Spanjar , Koen Kam and Floris Rost van Tonningen and was in operation from October 2004 to December 2013. Hyves was roughly comparable to the American Facebook or the German StudiVZ . The service was offered free of charge. Since December 2013, a platform for online games has been operated under the name Hyves Games.
The name "Hyves" comes from the English Beehive ("beehive"), so that a comparison of the users with bees in a beehive is drawn. The main focus of the site was to maintain friendships and make new ones.
Registered users could create a profile on Hyves.nl and equip it with various elements, including photos, videos and Flash animations . In July 2008, Hyves announced that it already had seven million users, five million of them Dutch. That corresponds to about a quarter of the Dutch population. In 2007, Hyves was voted “Most Popular Website of the Year” at the Dutch Online Awards. Hyves also won "Website of the Year" in 2006 and 2007 in the Blogs and Communities category.
Due to its great popularity with young people, many Dutch politicians also had their own user profile. As a result of the great growth of the site, since it exceeded the three million user mark, there were regular problems with the operating speed. According to a study by WatchMouse on January 11, 2008, Hyves was the fastest growing social network on the Internet. In March 2010, Hyves.nl had 9.9 million registered users.
