Product family

Linpus Linux Lite

Linpus Linux Lite is a live system for low-cost PCs such as Ultra-Mobile PCs , OLPC XO-1 , Classmate PC , Mobile internet devices and other mobile computers. The free downloadable version (file size just under 699 MB) of the first versions of the Lite Version already ran on i386 32bit PCs with less than 500 MHz clock frequency, 128 MB DRAM and 512 MB hard disk capacity , according to the manufacturer . From the first versions there were additional versions for other systems such as Intel StrongARM , XScale , ARM 7/9 and MIPS . From version 2, the manufacturer advertises Linpus Linux, which is one of the fastest booting distributions in around four seconds. A unified installer accelerates the installation, which now takes about 6 minutes via USB. Another innovation is that a customized Gnome 3 is used as the desktop. The current version 2.2 (as of 2014) requires a 64-bit Intel / AMD CPU with at least 1 GHz, 1 GB RAM and 6 GB hard drive capacity and is only available in English and Chinese .

Linpus Linux Desktop

Linpus Linux is the Linpus desktop version, in the course of the netbooks that appeared in 2007 (led by the Asus Eee PC - see Netbook # story - and followed by the Acer Aspire One ) also known as Chinese Linux , as it was very widespread in China was the most popular operating system for netbooks in most of the Asian market.

Just like Linpus Lite, the desktop version does not place great demands on the hardware required for installation and therefore also runs on older i386 PCs according to the manufacturer. The basic 32-bit version of Linpus Linux Desktop can be downloaded free of charge from the manufacturer's website (current version 9.6, file size 3.62 GB), whereby it should be noted that a deluxe version is also available there as 32- and 64-bit -Version with manual and support support is chargeable.

Linpus Linux Server

Linpus Linux Server is a professional (paid) enterprise business server software that is specially designed for stability. The current version is version 2.1, which is available for PCs with the computer architectures i386 and i586 .

Linpus Media Center

Linpus Media Center is a stand-alone Linux-based multimedia platform that works like a DVD player and enables the playback of various multimedia formats and the display of digital images. Linpus Media Center can be downloaded free of charge from the manufacturer's website, although it should be noted that an update ("update") also available there is subject to a charge.

financing

The manufacturer Linpus Technologies Inc. is mainly financed through the sale of the paid server versions. Since Linpus Linux is sold by various manufacturers with their laptops, it is likely that license fees will be paid to Linpus Technologies Inc. by the laptop manufacturers . However, these are likely to be much cheaper than the cost of Microsoft licenses.

criticism

KDE is included by default. Post-installation and integration of additional packages in order to adapt it to personal needs requires that the package management RPM from the Fedora distribution must be used. This is sometimes not that straightforward for Linux beginners, so Linpus Linux is not necessarily ideal for beginners. The free download of Linpus Linux Lite, Linpus Linux Desktop and Linpus Linux Media Center is currently only possible via the manufacturer's server, although long loading times are to be expected in some cases.
