The Classmate PC is a laptop produced by Intel , which was originally only intended to be available in developing countries. It was available in various configurations from 299 euros (third generation) and was developed as Intel's answer to the $ 100 laptop by the non-profit organization One Laptop per Child . The price of the new (fourth) generation of the Classmate PC was adjusted and was available for 429 euros at the start of sales. It is precisely because of its robustness (50–70 cm in height that is safe to fall on the floor) that the laptop should find its way into the classrooms of primary schools. Due to the higher resolution of the new, fourth generation, the device is now also more interesting for secondary schools and private individuals or companies.

The concrete use of the Classmate PC and the further development of it, however, clearly focuses on the demands of all children around the world and thus becomes an ideal companion for school.

distribution

The Classmate PC was originally intended to be available for purchase only in developing countries. The first 800 copies for tests reached Brazil's schools at the end of March 2007, although Brazil has not yet decided whether to buy the Classmate PC or the XO . In late September 2008, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez ordered a million Classmate PCs for distribution in schools across the country. Libya has ordered 150,000 devices.

The second generation of Classmate PCs are also available in Europe and the USA. Since autumn 2008, Classmate PCs from various manufacturers have also been offered in a German version.

The third generation Convertible Classmate PC is especially intended for classroom use and is intended to modernize learning. The third generation was available on the German market from July 2009.

The "fourth generation" has been available since the third quarter of 2010. Here is u. a. Screen size, SSD drive and RAM have been enlarged. The UMTS module, which is now optionally available, is not only very popular with schoolchildren, but has also become of interest to companies and sales representatives. Here it could become an inexpensive alternative to the iPad from Apple.
