Karl Alfred Graefe (born November 23, 1830 in Martinskirchen ; † April 12, 1899 in Weimar ; also: Alfred Karl Graefe ) was a German physician.

Graefe, cousin of Albrecht von Graefe , studied from 1850 to 1854 in Halle and Berlin , also for some time in Paris , in 1853 he became Graefe's assistant and until 1857 attended the entire redesign of ophthalmology .

In 1858 he completed his habilitation in Halle for ophthalmology and at the same time founded an institution for eye patients. In 1873 he received the full professorship in ophthalmology in Halle. Graefe had been the main representative of the school named after the latter since the death of his cousin.

Through his academic teaching activities, his restless zeal in the ophthalmological practice and as an excellent surgeon, he gained such a great reputation that around 4,000 patients sought help from him every year. In 1883 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

He wrote:

  • Clinical analysis of motility disorders of the human eye (Berlin 1858);
  • Theory of symptoms of eye muscle paralysis (1867);
  • A word in memory of A. v. Graefe (Hall 1870).

With Theodor Saemisch, among others, he published the handbook of the entire ophthalmology , (Leipzig 1874-80, 7 vol.), For which he worked on the motility disorders.
