Theodor Saemisch

Edwin Theodor Saemisch (born September 30, 1833 in Luckau in Niederlausitz , † September 29, 1909 in Bonn ) was a German ophthalmologist (ophthalmologist).

Life

Saemisch studied in Berlin and Würzburg . It was in 1858 at the University of Berlin Dr. med. PhD. Then he was assistant to Albrecht von Graefe in Berlin and Alexander Pagenstecher in Wiesbaden . The habilitation took place in 1862 for ophthalmology in Bonn .

In 1867 he became an associate professor of ophthalmology at the University of Bonn . In 1873 he was appointed full professor and director of the university eye clinic. In 1883 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1892/93 he was rector of the university and retired in 1906. He first described the serpiginous corneal ulcer and gave an effective surgical treatment for it.

A short street in the center of what was then the parliament and government district in Bonn was named after Saemisch and was closed in 2006.

family

Saemisch was married to Sieglinde (Linda) Ranke (1848-1891). She was the daughter of Professor of Protestant Theology in Marburg Ernst Ranke and Theodora (Theoda, Oda) Nasse (1812-1860) from Halle, in turn, daughter of Professor Christian Friedrich Nasse (1778-1851). The couple had a son:

Saemisch's grave is in the Kessenicher Bergfriedhof .
