Kessenicher Bergfriedhof
The Kessenicher Bergfriedhof (also: Neuer Kessenicher Friedhof ) is located at the end of the street Am Buchenhang on the edge of the Bonn district of Kessenich . Gregor-Mendel-Strasse ends below the cemetery . Because of its location on the eastern slope of the Venusberg , it is called "Bergfriedhof".
The cemetery was opened in 1893 after the closure of the old Kessenich cemetery on Nikolausstrasse , about 400 meters away . The cemetery with its protected trees is the resting place of many Bonn personalities; especially many professors from Bonn University are buried here. Some grave sites are lavishly designed. The 17,000 square-foot facility is bordered by a fence and has a blessing chapel from 1960. The cemetery stands as a monument under monument protection .
