Eduard Hegel

Eduard Hegel (born February 28, 1911 in Barmen ; † November 23, 2005 in Bonn ) was a German theologian and church historian .

Life

Eduard Hegel, son of the building contractor Albert Hegel and his wife Antonie Maria Ommer, studied Catholic theology and history at the Universities of Münster , Munich and Bonn . During his studies he joined the Catholic fraternity Alsatia. In 1933 he was in Bonn at Max Braubach Dr. phil. PhD . In 1937 he was ordained a priest in Cologne . Hegel initially worked as a pastor in Cologne . In 1943 he was with a thesis on the Cologne archbishops Maximilian Friedrich von Koenigsegg-Rothfels and Maximilian Franz of Austria to Dr. theol. PhD. With another scientific publication on the history of the Archdiocese of Cologne , he became known nationwide; the work became a standard work. In 1948 Hegel completed his habilitation at the University of Bonn.

After working at the seminary in Trier and at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster he received in 1966 a call to the succession Hubert Jedin at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University of Bonn . He also became the founding director of the Institute for Church History. In 1976 he retired .

Eduard Hegel was elected a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia in 1954. Since 1979 he has been a corresponding member of the commission. He was also chairman of the Historical Association for the Lower Rhine from 1967 to 1979 . In 1973 he became a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences. In 1974 he was awarded the title of Papal Honorary Prelate , in 1985 Apostolic Protonotary .

Hegel's grave is in the Kessenicher Bergfriedhof .
