Partly restored, historical grave crosses in the old Kessenich cemetery

The Old Kessenicher Friedhof is one of the oldest still existing cemeteries in what is now the area of the city of Bonn . Originally presumably already used as a burial place for members of the adjoining monastery, it was used as a public cemetery from 1827; the cemetery is located in the district of Kessenich and is a listed building .

With the address Nikolausstraße 6 it is on the hillside between Nikolausstraße / Rosenburgweg with the St.-Franziskus-Hospital and the higher situated Rosenburg . Opposite the narrow access path to the cemetery entrance (called Kuhgasse ) is the Kessenich war memorial . At the entrance to the cemetery is the historic Alt-St. Nicholas Chapel .

The cemetery, which was expanded in 1874, offers a largely unobstructed view of Kessenich and the Siebengebirge . The cemetery was officially closed in 1893 after the opening of the new Kessenich mountain cemetery around 400 meters away, but burials ( burial ) continued into the 21st century. Only 170 grave sites were available. The cemetery with its stock of tombstones, some of which are over 300 years old, is badly weathered; However, individual stone crosses were repaired by the city of Bonn in 1981. In 2012 the city administration considered a final abandonment of the cemetery, which should then be run as a public park from 2040 and thus contribute to a financial relief of the responsible cemetery budget.

The most striking grave in the cemetery is dedicated to the Klemmer family . It is a small grave chapel in Romanesque appearance, which is equipped with a small table altar and a standing cross inside . Made of red-brown brick, the chapel has small round arches and an elaborately decorated entrance gate. Wall openings and entrance are designed in the form of four-passports .

The graves of clergy, monks and nuns from the former Kessenich monastery and long-established Kessenich families can be found in the cemetery. The philologist Franz Bücheler , the architect Johannes Richter , the industrialist Gustav Schlieper and the historian Ernst from Weerth were also buried here.
