history

The origin of the war memorial is a linden tree planted shortly after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 for four fallen soldiers from Kessenich, which was initially called the Sieges Linden and later the Peace Linden. The memorial surrounding this linden tree was built in 1926 on behalf of the Kessenich Warrior Association and financed with donations from Kessenich citizens. "The memorial, designed by City Planning Officer Behr and executed by the Walbrück & Schlösser company, was inaugurated on May 1, 1926 with a nightly ceremony with a large participation of the population. Flag delegations from 25 associations of the Bonn District Warrior Association had appeared, as well as the Lord Mayor of Bonn and City Council members. " Originally only the names of 279 victims of the First World War were placed on six square shell limestone pillars, which, however, was expanded in 1956 to include the names of the 380 Kessenicher killed and 110 missing in the Second World War. The memorial has been a listed building since 1991.

description

Stylistically, the monument can be assigned to the neo-objective style . "On a multi-tiered, round base ring with a diameter of about 4 m, which is open in the middle, six 2.40 m high shell limestone pillars with a square floor plan are arranged circularly at equal intervals The architrave bears the words from the Gospel of John as an inscription in simple capital letters: Nobody shows greater love than he gives his life for his friends . The shell limestone pillars show on their three outer sides the rows of inscriptions of the fallen from the last three German wars with the corresponding dates. One of the pillars also reads: "The 110 missing from our local community will remain unforgotten when they returned home at the time this time was erected is hoped. Grateful remembrance also connects us with the war head of our new fellow citizens in Kessenich ”. At the top of the pillars there is a new object soldier's head with a Wehrmacht helmet, carved in stone. At the bottom the pillars are connected with wrought iron bars, each adorned with an iron cross in the middle. "

"Not least because of the sober and pleasantly unpathetic design, the memory of the dead is sensitively combined with the symbol for vitality, growth and blessing: the tree. The cycle of nature, from the dying leaves in autumn to the new green in the Spring is interpreted as a Christian hope for the resurrection. "
