Adolf Köppe (born October 10, 1874 in Fischbeck , Saxony-Anhalt, † November 20, 1956 in Norden , East Friesland) was a German farmer, animal breeder and association official.

Life

Adolf Köppe was the only child of the farm owner Johann Köppe and his wife. He graduated from secondary school in Jerichow and then attended the agricultural school in Erfurt . His excellent diploma authorized him to enter the University of Halle from 1891/92. Among other things, he attended lectures on animal breeding with Professor Julius Kühn .

In 1900 he took over the management of his parents' business. A cattle breeding cooperative was founded in Saxony-Anhalt as early as 1876 with the help of Johann Köppe. There Adolf Köppe was involved both in exhibitions, where he presented the winning cow at the association exhibition in 1904, and soon as chairman of the cooperative. Saxony-Anhalt was the leading breeding area at the DLG exhibition in 1914.

During the First World War , Köppe was drafted and his wife ran the farm. In 1921 he was elected animal breeding director of the Association of East Frisian stock breeders . He chose new ways to achieve his goals. In order to achieve the breeding goal he defined of increasing the fat content of milk from 3% to 5%, he had the breeding selection of the sire animals scientifically monitored. More than twenty dissertations brought new knowledge here. To train breeders, he organized study trips to the USA and animal shows and auctions were held to increase their profits. As early as the 1920s, there were cows in the East Frisian breeding area with a daily production of up to 50 kg milk.

A “central stable” with an attached farm was leased for scheduled, scientifically controlled breeding experiments. Even then, at his instigation, the best animals were imported from other domestic and foreign breeding areas. In 1938, several other breeding associations joined the association of East Frisian stock breeders. Köppe contributed to the fact that the Red Holstein lowland cattle , which was prevalent in East Friesland at that time , was pushed back by the more powerful Black Holstein cattle .

The market halls built in 1927 by the city of Leer , for which they could not raise the debt service, he bought against many concerns for the VOST. During the time of National Socialism he was temporarily not allowed to participate in state licensing because of a conviction by a special court for war economic crimes . Even after the end of the Second World War, he remained in office despite his age.

Köppe was married twice and, according to his own wishes, was buried in Fischbeck after his death.

He is the namesake of the Adolf-Köppe-Nadel of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Züchtungskunde eV, donated in 1956 , which is awarded in his memory of personalities who have achieved special merits in the field of practical animal breeding.
