Under the name Ultra-Mobile PC (former project name: Origami ), or UMPC for short , Microsoft and Intel launched a new class of portable computers at CeBIT in spring 2006 . Sony made a first attempt in this direction in 2004 with the Vaio U series, which, however, never came onto the market in Europe and was only sold in Asia. UMPCs were never able to achieve a significant market share in the PC market and were largely superseded by smartphones , phablets , tablets and convertibles in the 2010s .

description

Ultra-mobile PCs are smaller than subnotebooks , have a diagonally 12.7 to 17.8 centimeters (5–7 inch) TFT display and, similar to tablet PCs , are mainly used on the touch-sensitive screen or with stylus Pens served. Keyboards can be connected externally or are sometimes even integrated. In addition, common features of laptops such as a built-in camera for video telephony or photography and fingerprint sensors for authentication are widespread . GPS modules and navigation software are also often integrated.

The devices of the first generation are fully-fledged PCs with a Linux operating system or an adapted Windows XP tablet edition.

The devices of the second generation are on the one hand more energy efficient and achieve a longer battery life (up to 5 hours), on the other hand they support Windows Vista , partly with AeroGlass surface. As processors VIA C7 -M ULV processor with VIA VX700 chipset or Intel A110 processor used.

There is no fixed distinction between the terms subnotebook and ultra-mobile PC.

Areas of application

UMPCs were advertised for business users who can use their business software on the go with this device class without significant restrictions. So they are lighter / more mobile than notebooks , but more functional than a PDA that was common at the time . Ultra-mobile PCs have also been touted as multimedia players or navigation systems. Thanks to Bluetooth , UMTS and WLAN internet access, you can use it to communicate on the move, access websites, read e-mails or play online games . The targeted niche had overlaps with subnotebooks and PDAs, which means that even manufacturers cannot always clearly state the purpose.

The first devices were from Asus (model "R2H"), Founder and Samsung (model "Q1"). Asus, Samsung and Gigabyte Technology ( sold under the Medion label ) presented second generation devices at CeBIT 2007, all of which are operated with a modified version of Windows Vista.

The first ultra-mobile PC with a focus on video games is the Pandora, made in Germany .
