Traffic sign recognition

Traffic sign recognition

A traffic sign recognition is a type of driver assistance system which, with the help of a front-facing video camera usually attached in the area of the interior rearview mirror of an automobile and using image recognition methods, identifies traffic signs on the road on which the vehicle is traveling and displays them on a screen instrument or a Head-up display in the vehicle. Coupling with an intelligent speed adaptation for automatic control of the vehicle speed is also possible. There are also systems available that are based on a smartphonework and also save recognized traffic signs in the cloud .

functionality

While driving, the system is constantly looking for objects that could be traffic signs in terms of their external shape. These are then tracked by the video camera until they are close enough for the software to identify. The computer then forwards the information to the driver via optical, acoustic or haptic signals. Reliable detection is (as of 2010) possible up to speeds of around 160 km / h.

With some systems it is also possible to switch them so that the maximum speed is maintained and can only be exceeded by a kickdown.
