Intelligent Speed ​​Adaption (also: Intelligent Speed ​​Adaptation or Intelligent Speed ​​Assistance ) (ISA) is a driver assistance system to support the driver in complying with the current speed limit on the road section currently being driven on.

Use

ISA can make road traffic safer, smoother and quieter. The assistance system can save fuel and reduce particulate matter and CO₂ emissions. ISA could reduce the number of serious accidents by up to a quarter and the number of fatal accidents by 30 percent. ISA is considered to be the most effective means of reducing road traffic accidents .

costs

Much of the technology required for ISA is already standard equipment in new vehicles. Since March 2018, all new vehicles in the EU must have the eCall emergency call system with integrated GPS . Since many new vehicles already have lane keeping assistants, camera-based cruise control and traffic sign recognition, the European Commission estimates the additional costs for ISA at 47 to 62 euros per vehicle.

Types

The speed limits are either stored in a digital map in the navigation system and / or are determined by a traffic sign recognition. While with digital maps short-term changes to the permitted speed, for example at construction sites, can only be updated with great effort, traffic sign recognition struggles with the assignment of the recognized signs to the correct lane .

With the ISA, which is favored in Sweden and Great Britain, electronics (sometimes against the will of the driver) intervene externally in the speed selection.

As an alternative to this, so-called speed limit information systems are being developed which only inform the driver about the current speed limit and / or warn him if it is exceeded.

Compulsory installation

To reduce the number of accidents, ISA will be mandatory for new vehicles in the EU from 2022.
