history

In the case of the name Elbergen, the origin of the identifier is uncertain. The basic word is self-explanatory. Elbergen is first mentioned in the land register of the Benedictine Abbey in 890. In later years Elbergen belonged to Emsbüren as a self-governing peasantry . However, the place developed so well that a separate, independent community was eventually formed. In 1967 the previously independent municipality of Elbergen became part of the parish of Emsbüren. A municipality reform in 1974 made Elbergen again part of the municipality of Emsbüren.

Church history

Church with a cemetery

The church of St. John the Baptist was built between 1290 and 1310 in Romanesque style by the twelve farming families of Elbergen. In a letter of indulgence from Pope Benedict XII. it was first mentioned in 1338. In 1400 the Elberg church was converted into a Gothic church. For this purpose, the arched windows were replaced by Gothic windows with a pointed shape and the flat wooden ceiling by a vault made of bricks and sandstones.

The oldest and smallest bell in the church is an A bell from 1462, which is also the oldest in the municipality of Emsbüren . In 1602 an h bell followed, which is also the largest bell. The middle bell followed in 1662, a d bell. On July 16, 1942, the two larger bells for weapons production were delivered. However, due to their historical value, these were not melted down and came back to Elbergen in 1947 and 1948 respectively.

The church was expanded from 1740 to 1742 by a brick tower, which was supplemented in 1746 by a sundial on the south side and a copper-gilded cock on the top. During the renovation in 1903, a sacristy was added and the hollow tiles were replaced by nuns' roof tiles. The interior was completed in 1915 by a new altar and a Way of the Cross - painted on copper plates .

During the last extensive renovation, 1989–1991, the outer wall was first renovated and a new window was added, and a year later the outdoor area was renewed and embellished with a Bethlehem star. A comprehensive interior renovation followed in 1991. Here five frescoes on the ceiling were uncovered, which show the four apostles and the Easter lamb. The old floor was replaced by Oberkirchen sandstone. An electric bell for the bells was also installed, the organ was rebuilt and the organ loft was enlarged. The renovation cost a total of DM 845,000  , half of which was raised by the community.

School history

In 1802 the first school building was built in Elbergen. Other school buildings followed in 1836 and 1874. In 1956 the last school building was built in Elbergen. In 1975 the school was closed and the building was renamed the Elbergen village community center.

Railway history

The railway connection between Lingen and Rheine through Elbergen was opened on June 23, 1856 by the Hannoversche Westbahn . This was followed on May 1, 1897, when the Elbergen stop was opened for passenger traffic and limited freight traffic. This was indicated in the timetable from May 1898. On July 2, 1976, the last Deutsche Bahn passenger train stopped at Elbergen.

Population development

1816 1821 1839 1875 1880 1900 1939 1946 1965 1989 2007 2013
349 292 378 506 263 292 358 611 417 484 555 524

The strongly fluctuating population in the 19th century had various reasons. On the one hand, the emigration of 206 inhabitants to America from 1843. Furthermore, prisoners of war from France who were used in the construction of the Ems-Vechte Canal were included in the population until they returned home by 1880.

The population development from 358 in 1939 to over 600 after the Second World War in 1946 was due to an influx of refugees who made up 40% of the population of Elbergen after the war.

Others

In 1885 the first post office was opened in Elbergen. On July 1, 1911, this was converted into a post and telegraph office, which housed the first public telephone station in Elbergen. Mail was delivered here every day by a mail train. From October 1st, 1920, mail was distributed by the Lingen post office in Elbergen. From October 1, 1955 to October 31, 1974, there was again a separate post office in Elbergen, which had also had a postal savings bank service since September 1, 1968. After the post office closes, the post will be delivered by the Emsbüren post office.

In 1925 a high-voltage line was built from Rheine to Lingen. This connected Elbergen to the power grid and a local network was expanded.

In 1938 there was the first private telephone connection in Elbergen with the innkeeper and mayor of the time.
