The first generation came onto the market in September 1983 as the Space Wagon 1800 GLX and had a four-cylinder in-line engine with 1795 cc and 66 kW that drove the front wheels via a five-speed gearbox.
From March 1985, the exterior was slightly revised and a larger engine was offered. The Space Wagon 2000 GLX had a displacement of 1997 cm³ and 75 kW. A year later there was a diesel engine in the Mitsubishi Space Wagon Turbo D with 1796 cm³ displacement and 55 kW. For America, the gasoline engine with a catalytic converter and 62 kW was offered. In addition to the diesel engine, an optional all-wheel drive or a three-speed automatic transmission could be ordered.
The injection version of the gasoline engine for Europe, which was offered with a catalytic converter from mid-1988, was called the Space Wagon 2000 GLXi and has 75 kW with the same displacement. It replaced all previous versions with a gasoline engine.
Production was stopped at the end of 1991.

The second generation of the Space Wagon was offered from autumn 1991 with a fundamentally revised body and two petrol engines and one diesel. A 1.8-liter engine with 90 kW and a 2.0-liter engine were now available. The latter largely corresponds to the 75 kW engine of the previous model, but now with 16 valves and an output increased to 98 kW. Both performance variants have the same engine code (4G63).
Just as the first generation of the Mitsubishi Pajero was revived under the name Hyundai Galloper, the second generation of the Space Wagon (N30) was released from Hyundai ( Hyundai Precision & Ind. Co. ) under Mitsubishi license from mid-1995 to the end of 2002 . built under the name Hyundai Santamo or Galloper Santamo.
Production of the second Space Wagon ended in autumn 1998.

At the end of 2004 the production of the last representative of the space wagon series was stopped. The successor was the Mitsubishi Grandis .
