The Mitsubishi Space Gear / L 400 is a choice of four-wheel drive equipped minibus and vans of Mitsubishi Motors with up to nine seats. The chassis of the all-wheel drive version corresponds to that of the Mitsubishi Pajero . The models are based on the 4th generation Mitsubishi Delica . The Delica was previously offered in Europe as the Mitsubishi L300 , with the luxury bus with the panoramic roof of the L300 (which had been called Space Gear for a long time in Japan ) and the station wagon or van models were offered in parallel with Space Gear until 1998. The curb weight is given as 1690–2170 kg.

The Space Gear came to Europe as a luxuriously equipped van as early as 1994, but was initially only offered with the 2.0-liter petrol engines. Only later did the 2.4-liter petrol engine and the 73 kW diesel engine from the contemporary Mitsubishi Pajero follow. The interior had a level floor on which the seats could be attached variably. There was a separately controllable heating system for the rear, an electric sliding roof and electric blinds for the four panoramic windows in the roof. While initially two airbags were standard, there was only an anti-lock braking system as standard in the diesel engine, with which it cost 44,690 DM at the start in Germany. The 3.0-liter V6 petrol engine, which was coupled with an automatic transmission , was not available in Germany. Only in 1998 came with the L400 as a panel van and minibus , the actual successor of the L300 with the 2.5-liter diesel engine with turbocharger on the European market. Here, however, it only produced 64 kW.

The Hyundai H-1 was almost identical, but had a more modern engine.

Due to the lack of success, the import of the L400 was stopped again in 2001. The Space Gear, on the other hand, was imported until 2003. Neither model received a successor in Europe. But they were still produced until 2006 and the Delica Space Gear was replaced by the Mitsubishi Delica D: 5.
