Michael John "Mike" Sullivan (born September 22, 1939 in Omaha , Nebraska ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ), who was governor of the state of Wyoming from 1987 to 1995 .

Career

Sullivan grew up in Douglas , Wyoming. He graduated from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor of Science degree in petroleum and natural gas engineering in 1961 and a Bachelor of Law degree from its Law Department in 1964 . After his admission to the bar, he practiced in Casper , where his main focus was on criminal litigation related to the defense of injured persons and malpractice. He was elected governor of Wyoming in 1986 and confirmed in 1990. During his tenure, he served as Chairman of the Western Governors' Association , the Interstate Oil & Gas Compact Commission, and the Alliance for Acid Rain Control . He was also a member of the National Governors' Association Executive Committee .

After the end of his second term, he became a Fellow of the Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 1995 . Sullivan was also the United States Ambassador to Ireland from 1999 to 2001 under President Bill Clinton . He is currently working as a lawyer again.
