Jack Robert Gage (born January 13, 1899 in McCook , Red Willow County , Nebraska , † March 14, 1970 in Cheyenne , Wyoming ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ), who served from 1961 to 1963 as acting governor of the state of Wyoming officiated.

Career

Gage graduated from Wyoming High School in Worland in 1918 and then immediately enlisted in the Army Coast Artillery Corps . Dismissed a year later, he went to the University of Wyoming , which he left in 1924 with a degree in agricultural engineering . He then taught at a school and ran a bookstore before being elected State Superintendent of Public Instruction for a four-year term in 1934 . After losing his reelection attempt, he became postmaster at Sheridan . In 1958 he was elected Secretary of State .

When Governor John J. Hickey resigned from his post to take over the seat of Edwin Keith Thomson, who died after his election, in the US Senate , Gage continued his duties as acting governor. During his tenure, he sought back payments and land from the federal government, and made an unsuccessful attempt to almost triple the state oil licenses for the state. He was defeated in the 1962 governor election and then returned to the private sector where he authored several books including Ten Sleep and No Rest , Pack of Lies, and Afoot and Horseback .
