Sally Margaret Jewell (born February 21, 1956 in London ) is an American entrepreneur and politician. She was the United States Secretary of the Interior in the Obama Cabinet from 2013 to 2017 . Before that, she was an entrepreneur and managed the outdoor goods trading company Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) , which is organized as a consumer cooperative and has 11.6 million members, an annual turnover of 1.8 billion dollars and over 11,000 employees (as of 2011).

Life

Sally Jewell was born Sally Margaret Roffey in London. She is the daughter of Peter Roffey, a British anesthetist , and his wife Anne, a nurse practitioner. The family emigrated from England to the USA in 1959, where Peter Roffey had received a position as a fellow at the University of Washington . Her parents had left England because of the ossified class system they found. Sally Jewell completed until 1973, the State High School in Renton . When she was 19, she was granted citizenship of the United States . In 1978 she earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Washington, and shortly thereafter married an engineer.

She then worked, like her husband, for Mobil Oil on oil fields in Oklahoma, among others . In 1981 she moved to Rainier Bank when they were looking for industry experts for lending to the oil industry; the bank was later taken over by Security Pacific . From 1992 to 1995 she was with WestOne Bank , until 2000 with Washington Mutual . From 1996 Jewell was on the board of directors of REI, in 2000 she was appointed Chief Operating Officer (COO) and in 2005 Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The Puget Sound Business Journal magazine named CEO of the Year of 2006. In 2009, the National Audubon Society recognized Jewell for her contribution to conservation with the Rachel Carson Award.

In February 2013, US President Barack Obama nominated her for the office of Secretary of the Interior. She was sworn in on April 10, 2013 as the successor to Ken Salazar .
