The Stavropoleos Monastery ( Romanian Mănăstirea Stavropoleos ) is a Romanian Orthodox monastery in Bucharest . It was built in 1724 in the Brâncoveanu style by the Greek monk Ioanichie Stratonikeas and is considered one of the most beautiful and important architectural monuments of the Romanian capital. The church is dedicated to the holy archangels Michael and Gabriel .

history

Ioanichie first built a caravanserai here in 1720 . The church and the monastery were built in the inner courtyard of the inn during the second reign of Prince Nicolae Mavrocordat in Wallachia (1719–1730). It was with him that the so-called Phanariot period began in fact in the Romanian principalities . The monastery (like most of the Bucharest monasteries of the time) was financed by the income from the associated hostel.

present

The monastery is located in the center of Bucharest in the street of the same name (Romanian Strada Stavropoleos ), not far from Calea Victoriei , the historically most important street in the old town of Bucharest. Only the church has survived from the original building complex. At the beginning of the 20th century, a new inner courtyard and a building were built according to plans by the architect Ion Mincu , which today houses a library, a conference hall and a collection of old icons and cult objects as well as some frescoes from the Bucharest churches that were destroyed by the communist regime.

A special feature of the church that has received much attention is the nationally and internationally valued church choir ( Grupul Stavropoleos ), which has existed since 1994 and which revives the old traditions of Byzantine and post-Byzantine music.
