Robert D. Fulton

Robert David Fulton (born May 13, 1929 in Waterloo , Iowa ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He was the 37th governor of the state of Iowa in 1969 .

Career

Fulton attended Iowa State Teachers College and then the University of Iowa , where he took his law exam in 1958. Between 1958 and 1960 Fulton was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives , and from 1962 to 1964 he was a member of the Iowa Senate .

In 1964 he was elected lieutenant governor of his state. He held this office between 1965 and January 1, 1969. On that day, incumbent Governor Harold Hughes resigned from office to join the US Senate . Although a new governor of Iowa, Robert Ray, had already been elected in November 1968 , the constitution stipulated that he could only begin his term after the end of the previous term. That appointment was due on January 16, 1969. Lieutenant Governor Fulton had to bridge the remaining 16 days as governor.

Until 1999, Robert Fulton remained the last Democratic governor of Iowa. In the gubernatorial elections of 1970 he ran unsuccessfully against Ray. Fulton was then on the Democratic National Committee and a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1972. Robert Fulton has four children with his wife Rachel Breault.
