Robert T. Anderson (born March 8, 1945 in Newton , Jasper County , Iowa ) is an American politician . Between 1983 and 1987 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Iowa.

Career

Robert Anderson graduated from high school in Le Grand and then studied journalism at the University of Iowa . He served as a high school teacher in various cities in Iowa for ten years. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In 1974 he was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives. He stayed there until 1982. During this time he was a member of several committees. In 1982, Anderson was elected lieutenant governor of Iowa alongside Terry E. Branstad . He held this office between 1983 and 1987. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . He was also the first Democrat to hold this post under a Republican governor.

Robert Anderson has worked in Newton's real estate business since retiring as Lieutenant Governor. In 1987 he founded the Iowa Peace Institute and became its executive director. He also founded IRIS, Inc. ( Iowa Resource for International Service ) in 1993 . This brought several hundred people from different countries in the former Eastern Bloc, Asia and Africa to Iowa. In addition, many students from these countries have been trained in Iowa with the help of IRIS . In 2008 and 2009, Anderson was also involved in planning to help refugees from Iraq . He was also the executive director of the Institute for Tomorrow's Workforce , which works to improve education in the state of Iowa, among other things.
